Senior / Principal Hardware Architect

We are seeking Senior & Principal Hardware Architects with extensive years of experience to join our team. The ideal candidates will have a strong background in the defence industry and expertise in Hardware systems engineering, verification, project management, and d ocumentation . We are looking for Engineers who p romote a mindset of attention to detail, communication, and teamwork within the team. Candidates with a good understanding of all aspects of Systems Engineering relating to lifecycle processes and methodologies should apply.

Responsibilities

• As a Hardware Architect in the Customer’ Underwater Systems Division, you will lead the definition and design of hardware architectures supporting ASW capabilities. This will include electronics, power, and mechanical integration for sonar, sensors, and control systems. You will ensure hardware solutions are technically robust, manufacturable, and aligned with overall system architectures and programme requirements.
• Key Responsibilities:
• Define and manage hardware architectures for ASW sonar and sensor systems
• Develop specifications, interface control documents, and hardware integration strategies
• Collaborate with systems and software architects to ensure coherent end-to-end solutions
• Lead hardware trade studies, risk assessments, and design reviews
• Support design for manufacture, environmental qualification, and through-life support considerations
  

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
• Applicable and suitable experience can be substituted for qualifications.
  
  

Essential Skills

• Strong understanding of electronics, power distribution, and mechanical integration.
• Familiarity with environmental standards (e.g. DEF STAN, MIL-STD) for underwater systems.
• Ability to lead cross-functional engineering teams through the design lifecycle.
  
  

Desired Skills

• Ability to analyse complex technical problems and generate effective solutions.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective cross-functional collaboration.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of articulating complex technical concepts to diverse audiences.
• Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment with evolving priorities.
  
  

Experience

• Experience in hardware architecture for defence or complex engineering systems.
• Domain Knowledge: Submarine or wider Maritime Defence experience preferred; SONAR experience is a distinct advantage.
  
  

What Do I Need Before I Apply

• Engineers must meet the following criteria:
• Security Cleared (SC, sole UK national, BPSS)
• Onsite Availability: Minimum 3 days per week at Templecombz
• Lifecycle Familiarity: Demonstrated experience across the full V-model development lifecycle
• Leadership Ability: Self-starting and capable of leading small engineering teams when required
