Description

About the Role

NPL is seeking an experienced Senior Scientist based in Teddington to plan and deliver a number of technical activities to take our research to the next level. This full-time job comes with a generous salary and benefits package.

The role will involve developing and conducting techniques for the microstructural characterisation of materials across the length scales, determined with a range of microscopy techniques but particularly in the scanning electron microscope. The ability to relate microstructure to performance is essential. The work can cover a wide range of materials, from nano materials to engineering components and biological materials. Although it is expected that high quality scientific publications will result from this research, a key outcome will be the development of validated measurement procedures for microstructural characterisation that can be used to develop assured data and international standards on materials structure and performance.

What you'll be doing:

  • Developing new and existing microscopy techniques to improve accuracy and reduce uncertainties in microstructural measurements, including EBSD and FIB methods
  • Developing partnerships to strengthen our capability
  • Acting as an ambassador for our work externally and being willing to promote what we do
  • Providing technical support for any bids we may be undertaking
  • Sharing your learnings so that we all benefit and mentoring those with less experience than you

About You

The role will require a science or engineering-related degree and relevant post-graduate studies, with specific knowledge and experience of materials characterisation with scanning electron microscopy and focused ion beam milling (FIB-SEM).

What you can bring to the role:

  • Educated to a science or engineering-related degree
  • Experience or postgraduate studies in microstructural characterisation in the SEM
  • Strong data analysis and interpretation skills
  • Report writing skills
  • Ability to manage your own workload
  • Strong focus on quality and health and safety
  • Scientific problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders
  • Customer focused attitude

We would also welcome the following:

  • Educated to PhD level in engineering/science
  • Knowledge of Focused Ion Beam SEM and EBSD
  • Experience in hardware-software interfacing
  • The ability to produce creative ideas in a R&D environment

We actively recruit citizens of all backgrounds, but the nature of our work in specific departments means that nationality, residency and security requirements can be more tightly defined than others. You will be asked about this throughout the recruitment process. To work at NPL, you will need to obtain BPSS security clearance. To work in this role you will also need to have an SC clearance with no restrictions, or you must have the ability to obtain an SC clearance.

Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert therefore we may at any time bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as practical
