Description

Cambridge University is seeking an experienced Senior Systems Administrator to provide temporary cover for an initial period of six months at Band 8a. This is a hands-on senior technical role focused on supporting, maintaining and securing systems that underpin critical estates and facilities services across the Trust. Working within the Unified Communications Division, the post holder will play a key role in ensuring system reliability, security and compliance across complex and business-critical environments.

About the role

The Senior Systems Administrator will take ownership of the day-to-day administration and lifecycle management of enterprise systems, working closely with internal teams and external suppliers. The role requires strong technical capability, a methodical approach to problem-solving and ability to understand systems end-to-end in order to support safe and resilient hospital operations.

Key responsibilities include:

Administering, monitoring and maintaining enterprise IT and OT systems to ensure performance, availability and compliance
Managing system lifecycle activities across on-premise, cloud and third-party environments
Enforcing cyber security standards, including vulnerability management, patching and recovery processes
Supporting and managing cloud services, including Microsoft 365 and identity services via Microsoft Entra ID
Providing senior-level networking and infrastructure support, including WiFi, VPNs, firewalls and core networking services
Acting as a 2nd/3rd line escalation point for complex and business-critical technical issues, including CAFM systems

Working collaboratively with external suppliers and service partners

Creating and maintaining accurate technical documentation, configuration management records and system processes

Embedding best practice, continuous improvement and system maturity across the environment

About you

You will be an experienced systems professional with strong analytical skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage complex technical environments. You will be comfortable working across multiple technologies, engaging with stakeholders at all levels and taking ownership of systems and issues through to resolution.

Essential experience includes:

Significant experience administering and supporting enterprise IT systems and infrastructure
Strong technical knowledge of Windows Server environments and SQL-based systems
Experience supporting cloud platforms and Microsoft 365 services
Proven experience implementing and maintaining security controls and compliance practices
Strong understanding of networking fundamentals and infrastructure troubleshooting

Experience working with third-party suppliers and managed service providers

Ability to document systems clearly and understand them end-to-end

Desirable:

Experience within the NHS or wider public sector
Knowledge of estates, facilities or operational technology environments
ITIL, PRINCE2 or similar service / project management qualifications

Further information:

NHS Band 8a - £270 - £280 / day inside IR35
Temp cover 37.5h / week for a period of 6 months
