The LGC Group, in partnership with the Medical Research Council (MRC) an institution behind legendary breakthroughs like the discovery of DNA’s structure and multiple Nobel laureates is recruiting a Senior Technology Transfer Manager.


As part of this role, you will help guide the journey from scientific breakthroughs to real world impact. You’ll play a critical role in protecting intellectual property, catalysing collaborations, and shaping commercialisation strategies to ensure publicly funded research delivers maximum benefit.


About Us

LGC’s Grant Management Group works with UK government departments and arm’s length bodies to support medical and health research across the UK. Our activities include funding call management, contract management and Intellectual Property management. We work with senior level stakeholders in academia, the NHS, government and industry to promote improvements in medical and health care in the UK and overseas.


As part of our expanding services to government customers, LGC is expanding its expertise in technology transfer. We are looking for individuals with experience of technology transfer, intellectual property management and commercialisation of research in the medical, health and life science sectors.


Job Purpose

To work closely with researchers and officials to ensure effective and efficient identification, management and commercialisation of intellectual property assets.


Key Activities

  • Manage a portfolio of complex Intellectual Property (IP) and commercialisation cases, ensuring delivery within agreed timelines
  • Provide regular site support (London, Edinburgh, Cambridge, Salisbury, Swindon, Harwell) through weekly or more frequent visits to researchers
  • Coordinate and oversee external law firms and patent attorneys on complex IP and commercialisation issues
  • Develop business cases for spinouts, licensing, and technology/IP asset sales
  • Analyse markets, revenue potential, and commercial strategies to inform decision-making
  • Lead negotiations with inventors, licensees, and investors to secure strong financial outcomes for MRC
  • Deliver training to staff on IP and commercialisation
  • Manage contractual and collaboration agreements, seeking legal advice as needed
  • Ensure effective IP protection in collaboration with patent attorneys
  • Support colleagues with complex technology transfer activities
  • Contribute to industrial partnerships, reagents portfolio management, and entrepreneurial training
  • Conduct due diligence on funding applications for IP issues
  • Line manage up to two staff


About You

Essential Criteria

  • Degree (BSc, MSc, or PhD) in life sciences, with additional qualifications in business or law advantageous, or equivalent professional experience
  • Extensive experience in technology transfer, managing and commercialising complex IP and patent portfolios
  • Proven expertise in intellectual property commercialisation within the medical and life sciences sectors
  • Strong track record of negotiating licences and spinout company creation with diverse stakeholders
  • Skilled in fostering collaborations with industry, researchers, and government to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes
  • Excellent ability to communicate complex IP and commercialisation concepts clearly and effectively to varied audiences


Desired Criteria

  • Proven experience in customer-facing roles, managing multiple active projects simultaneously
  • Skilled in collaborating with external legal counsel and patent agents to resolve issues and safeguard IP assets
  • Experienced in delivering IP-focused training to scientists and research staff
  • Proficient in reviewing research funding applications and conducting thorough due diligence
  • Demonstrated experience in line managing one to two direct reports, providing guidance and support for team development


Compensation, Benefits & Working Arrangements:

  • Salary: £58,000 + per year
  • Location: Victoria, London and Cambridge / Hybrid working model
  • Contract Type: Full Time, Permanent
  • Working Hours: 7.5 hours per day
  • Annual Leave: 25 days, plus UK public holidays

This is a Victoria, London, office based, hybrid role, with an expectation for all employees to attend our offices a minimum of one day a week, four days a month, and may increase, subject to team requirements. There will be a requirement to attend stakeholder sites in Cambridge and Harlow.
