Location: The locations for this role are Newport, Titchfield (Fareham) and Manchester.

We operate a flexible hybrid working model across the UK, with colleagues linked to one of our contractual locations and working between office and remote throughout the week. As part of the hybrid working arrangement there is a 40% minimum office attendance requirement.


Salary: £41,364-£46,654 Plus a role specific skills allowance of £750.00 (non-pensionable and non-contractual) may be payable.

Are you ready to lead innovation in testing and make a real impact with data that matters? We're looking for a Senior Test Engineer to drive high-quality, high-impact solutions at the Office for National Statistics.


In this role, you'll lead system, integration, End to End (E2E), and acceptance testing—refining services through iterative design and championing precision and innovation. If you're passionate about quality, collaboration, and continuous improvement, this is your chance to lead with purpose.


What You’ll Do

  • Design and deliver robust testing frameworks across system, integration, E2E, and acceptance levels.
  • Shape requirements and lead test planning, execution, and defect management.
  • Collaborate with developers, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure seamless delivery.
  • Build and maintain automated test harnesses and adapt frameworks to evolving needs.
  • Mentor testers and promote best practices across ONS’s testing community.


What You’ll Bring

  • Strong coding skills (expertise in one or more languages).
  • Experience with risk-based testing and automation.
  • Ability to translate complex requirements into meaningful test coverage.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement.
  • A proactive mindset and agile delivery experience.
