Job Purpose
The Waste Disposal & Recycling Department sits within the wider Waste Services division of United Utilities and is responsible for facilitating Waste Management requests from our Operational teams across the business.
The scope includes (but is not limited to) General Waste bins or skips, Mixed Recycling bins or skips, Specific recyclables (e.g. wood, metal etc..), Grits & Screenings waste skips (Wastewater), Hazardous waste requests (various). These are a combination of regular scheduled movements and requested uplifts from the sites.
The team also get involved with other adhoc requests for Waste related issues and will engage our Contract Partners in order to progress these movements.
Accountabilities & Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the operational and administrative activities of the Waste Disposal & Recycling Department, ensuring efficient service delivery across Water & Wastewater sites, offices, and network locations through third-party contractors.
- Oversee contract performance, including service level compliance, invoice validation, and regular liaison with Contract Partners and internal Commercial teams to ensure high standards and strategic alignment.
- Handle escalations and complaints, resolving site queries through effective communication with contractors and internal stakeholders, while ensuring all waste management data is reliable, accurate, and complete.
- Support team leadership, including line management of administrative staff and providing cover for other Senior Waste Co-ordinators, while contributing to departmental strategy and sustainability initiatives.
- Manage budgets and reporting, working within a £3m OPEX budget, ensuring regulatory compliance, and taking responsibility for monthly financial and annual regulatory reporting deadlines.
Technical Skills & Experience
- A high standard of knowledge and understanding of the waste management business, including the regulatory frameworks in which UU and the specifically the Waste Services team fall under, is important for the role.
- Ideally a minimum of 2 years experience in the waste industry.
- Experience in a supervisory position, ideally in an operations or business administration role, is important for this role.
- A strong understanding and experience of using computer systems and office programs for financial and management reporting is essential for this role.
- Strong communication and presentation skills are essential in order to effectively manage relationships with contract partners, site personnel, regulators and other stakeholders.
- A flexible approach to working specifically work location and hours is important as there will often be a requirement to work away from the base location (Davyhulme WwTW) and attend UU and contract partner sites across the North West of England.
- Experience and capability of working on their own, under their own direction and managing their pattern of work, as well as working as part of a wider team is important for this role.

Qualifications
Preferably educated to degree level in a science discipline (ideally Chemistry or similar) although a level of academic or vocational qualifications (e.g. HND/HNC level) in a scientific, engineering or business management discipline may be sufficient for the role.
