Job Title: Server Support Engineer (Shift-Based, Onsite)

Location: Oxford (100% office-based)

Salary: £40,000 – £45,000 + Performance Bonus + On-Call Allowance + Benefits

Working Pattern: 12-hour shifts (4 days on / 4 days off), alternating between days (7am–7pm) and nights (7pm–7am)

Overview

An established, technology-focused organisation in Oxford is growing its IT operations team to support its 24/7 mission-critical systems. We’re seeking a Server Support Engineer to join the infrastructure team and help maintain reliable, secure, and high-performing Microsoft-based environments.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives in a hands-on technical position, enjoys problem-solving in real time, and wants to play a key role in supporting complex, high-availability infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Deliver first and second-line support across Microsoft-based infrastructure and services.
Diagnose and resolve incidents affecting servers, virtual environments, and core business applications.
Monitor system health and performance to ensure maximum uptime and fast incident response.
Support and maintain environments hosting high-traffic web and e-commerce systems.
Administer and configure Windows Server, IIS, and Network Load Balancing (NLB) components.
Manage and maintain virtualized platforms (VMware and Hyper-V).
Participate in a 4-on / 4-off shift rotation, including both day and night shifts.
Provide on-call support (approximately 25% of the time) for production emergencies.
Collaborate with other engineers to enhance system reliability, security, and performance.
Maintain accurate technical documentation and operational runbooks.

Technical Skills & Expertise

Strong knowledge of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022), IIS, and NLB.
Proficient in VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V administration.
Experience supporting Microsoft infrastructure services such as Active Directory, DNS, and Remote Desktop Services (RDS).
Understanding of e-commerce or high-traffic web environments with thousands of concurrent users.
Proven ability to troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues and quickly adapt to new technologies.
Familiarity with PowerShell scripting, monitoring tools, and incident management processes is an advantage.
