Your role as a Shunter

Overview

We are looking for an experienced Shunter to join our Transport team in Bodmin. This is a critical role ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trailers on-site, supporting operational compliance and maintaining the highest safety standards.

Shift Pattern: 3 over 7 (Monday to Wednesday), 12-hour day shifts, with overtime expected to support factory output.
Starting Salary:

£29,111.10 per annum + £70 per additional shift bonus and overtime opportunities.

Location: Bodmin.

Key Responsibilities

Complete daily vehicle and trailer checks in full, promptly reporting any defects or safety issues in line with company procedures.
Monitor and record trailer temperature, fuel levels, and mains power connections, ensuring compliance with product safety and transport regulations.
Coordinate the safe and accurate parking of empty trailers within the yard, issuing clear instructions to inbound drivers.
Conduct a full trailer audit at the start of each shift, maintaining an accurate record of all loaded trailers on-site.
Oversee loading and collection processes, verifying that all goods are secured, correctly stored at the required temperature, and prepared for departure in accordance with site protocols.
Inspect returning vehicles and trailers for new or unreported damage, escalating issues as per company reporting lines.
Operate all vehicles in a safe, legal and courteous manner, maintaining high standards of road safety and professionalism.
Minimise risk during deliveries and collections by adhering strictly to safety protocols for self, colleagues, and the public.

Follow all site rules, company policies and standard operating procedures without exception.

Maintain a clean, safe and organised working environment including the tug, units and trailers used throughout the shift.

Ensure full compliance with DEFRA regulations relating to vehicle hygiene, contamination risk and trailer management.

Work in line with scheduled shifts and, where required, support additional coverage in accordance with the Working Time Directive and driver hours regulations.

Operate effectively within a 365-day operation that includes both day and night shifts, aligned to a Monday to Friday core delivery schedule.

Requirements:

Proven experience in a shunting or yard-based vehicle movement role.
Possession of the relevant vehicle licence for the class of vehicle operated (endorsement-free: no DR convictions).
Completion of recognised in-house Shunt/Tug Training.
Valid Driver Qualification Card (Driver CPC).
Maximum of 3 penalty points on driving licence.
Strong understanding of driver hours regulations and the Working Time Directive.
Effective verbal communication skills, both face to face and via transport systems (e.g. radio or mobile).

Performance-focused with a consistent approach to meeting delivery and movement targets.

Flexible, adaptable and responsive to changes in workload or operational requirements.

Capable of resolving site or vehicle-related issues calmly and efficiently, whether on-site or during route operations.
