Overview

Are you passionate about empowering children and young people who are deaf or have hearing needs to achieve their full communication potential? We're looking for a dedicated and skilled Sign and Communication Tutor to join our well established Children's Sensory Team within Education Services.

This vital role involves leading the development and promotion of various communication methods, including Total Communication, British Sign Language (BSL), Sign Supported English (SSE), and Makaton, across Harrow's educational settings and in homes. You'll play a key part in maximizing the communication skills of children and young people who are deaf, have hearing needs (some children and young people have additional needs), including those with cochlear implants.

You'll also work closely with families of pre-school children, empowering them to communicate effectively with their children through signing and other communication skills. This extends to collaborating with staff and peers of children and young people who are deaf or have hearing needs to foster an inclusive communication environment.

An aspect of this role involves planning and delivering British Sign Language (BSL) training courses for families, educational professionals, and other services. You'll also be instrumental in developing and designing engaging resources to support your work and that of the wider team.

You'll regularly visit children, young people, and teachers in both educational settings and homes to provide direct support and guidance, ensuring timely and appropriate communication assistance for their learning and development.

Please note: - Term-Time only

The salary is a percentage of the full time amount that is displayed above due to it being 39 weeks per year + part time

About You

The succcesful candidate will have:

  • Ability to lead on the co-ordination sourcing and making of specialist resources and delivery of those resources.
  • Ability to advise and support others in the CST, in educational settings and families regarding specialist resources.
  • Ability to support the child and young person appropriately enabling them to develop their sign / communication skills and promote their independence.
  • Ability and understanding to follow advice, specific and specialist programmes of work provided by the CST advisory teachers and other professionals to support the child / young person.
