EKHUFT has a busy and exciting programme of Simulation Based Education and invites anaesthetic fellows to join the Simulation Team. You will be trained by the Simulation Team to be able to operate a range of simulation technologies and learn how to become a simulation facilitator by undergoing simulation debrief training. In addition to learning the science behind simulation-based education you will also learn about human factors and non-technical skills which will both enhance your role as a healthcare educator and as a clinician. Throughout the year you will have the opportunity to join expert multi-professional faculties in the delivery of local and regional courses. A wide range of simulation activities are offered to different clinical specialities as well as undergraduates and Foundation Programme doctors. You will be involved in anaesthetic crisis resource training and transfer skills training. By joining the Simulation Team, you will get the opportunity to support quality improvement initiatives and become involved in resilience testing of clinical environments which undergo modification.
Clinical Duties
Clinical activity will include pre, peri and post-operative management of surgical patients and on-call duties described below.
A logbook of the clinical cases undertaken should be recorded and an option to complete a reflective learning portfolio of their teaching activities. Annual appraisal is conducted locally through the Trust appraisal and revalidation system.
On Call Arrangements
There is a three tier on-call structure for anaesthetics lead by the on-call Consultant Anaesthetist who is resident until 2200h. This direct supervision provides an excellent opportunity for training whilst participating in emergency duties. Skills will be developed in the management of patients undergoing surgery in theatre as well as providing airway support in the ED, cardiac arrest, pPCI suite, trauma calls and working on the labour ward.
The on-call commitments should approximate to a 1 in 8. There may be some change in the pattern of weekend and night time cover as staffing levels change. There are 3 resident doctors for 24 hours a day (includes a resident Consultant until 2200h). The on-call duties of the post-holder will be dependent on competence and experience. An experienced post-holder with obstetric experience and competencies would be expected to cover the maternity unit as well as supporting the junior anaesthetist in theatres, cardiac catheter suite and assist with airway emergencies on ITU.
