Job Overview

Frimley Health invites you to join our friendly and supportive team of nurses In Heatherwood Hospital Day Surgery Unit.

We have recently sought and achieved GIRFT accreditation as a Surgical Hub (see GIRFT Website)

You will also learn about Lithotripsy which as a service prevents and greatly reduces emergency admissions to hospital.

This role is perfect for those who are experienced surgical nurses looking for a new challenge working in a state of the art building with a friendly forward thinking team.

The Day Surgery Unit runs from Monday to Saturday 07:00-22:00. You will be expected to work a mixture of early and Late shifts.

We are very proud of our lovely building and and added to this we have Electronic Patient Records which means joined up care and communication throughout Frimley Health.

The Unit consists of 22 Individual patient PODs where we admit and care for patients having a variety of General and Local anaesthetic procedures.

We have standardised pathways of care for many of our patients and 95% of patients booked as Day Case have been discharged successfully on the day.

We work together to ensure the best possible experience for our patients, and this is reflected in the Friends and family feedback we receive every month.

Main duties of the job

To work clinically providing visible leadership, direction, co-ordination and forward planning to ensure the smooth and safe running of the Day Surgery

To support the Senior Sister, ensuring the department ethos reflects the Trust values, and assist with the delivery of patient safety, a good patient experience and the effective running of the department.

The Sister’s role has a strong focus on customer care, quality & safety including challenging poor practice from staff of any grade. Clinical excellence is essential alongside the managerial responsibilities of leading a team including performance, appraisals and managing sickness.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities

To act as a credible clinical role model
To undertake operational duties to maintain efficiency and patient safety
To deliver and audit Trust and national standards
To support and provide leadership for the nursing team
To act as a mentor and assist on the induction of new staff and students, providing supervision where appropriate
To participate in recruitment and selection of new staff.
To be aware of the complaints procedure and to deal with first level complaints as necessary.
To act in accordance with policies and nursing procedures as per Trust policy.
To ensure confidentiality of patient records and high standards of nursing documentation.
To escalate as appropriate any untoward incidents.
To participate in ongoing clinical supervision.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

To be responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care without supervision
To pro-actively co-ordinate patients’ admissions and discharge arrangements in accordance with Trust Policy
Ensure that all nursing practice within the clinical area complies with Trust Nursing policies and procedures
To always comply with the NMC Code of Conduct (2008)
To communicate effectively and liaise with all health care staff as appropriate
To demonstrate a collaborative approach to planning care through effective communication and decision making between the multi-disciplinary team, patients and significant others.
Consolidate and extend own clinical skills in all aspects of nursing, furthering own professional knowledge in a rapidly changing environment
Provide clinical leadership and development support to the nursing team
Where issues of clinical competence are identified, work with the Ward Senior Sister/Charge Nurse to address them
Contribute to the local resolution, investigation and follow action of any informal or formal complaints
To prioritise own work and others to ensure the ward/department is managed effectively

To provide specialist knowledge and expertise within ward/department

Participate in and lead quality initiatives to promote and ensure that nursing care is evidence and research based

Qualifications

Essential criteria

Current NMC Registration
Awareness of current professional nursing issues.
Evidence of qualification to undertake the supervision, teaching and assessing of students and junior nursing team.
Evidence of continuous professional development (CPD).
ACLP course completed / ongoing.

Desirable criteria

Degree in Nursing or other relevant field or can demonstrate experience of working to this level.
Post Registration qualification in specialty
Orthopaedic / Surgical Course

Experience

Essential criteria

At least 6 months of post-registration experience in an Inpatient setting.
Assess, plan evaluate and implement care ensuring that current research is used.
Able to prioritise tasks.
Excellent written/communication skills

Desirable criteria

Knowledge of or experience in coaching and mentoring practices and tools
Knowledge of or experience in Quality improvement tools, techniques, and methods
