Description
The Same Day Emergency Care unit at St Mary’s Hospital is looking for motivated and enthusiastic sisters/charge nurses to join the team.

You need to be passionate about providing high quality, emergency same day care in this fast paced, evolving and exciting area of acute emergency care. You must have excellent communication skills and be excited about being part of an innovative nursing team.

This is an exciting time to join Same Day Emergency care as we increase the numbers of patients attending the service. We see approximately 70 patients a day on each site, with varying presentations including renal colic, DVT, cellulitis, low risk chest pain and many more. We work closely with the Emergency Department, taking many patients from A&E and UTC. In addition to those who are referred in by their own GPs, London Ambulance service (LAS) and 111.

This post consists of a mixture of long days (0800-2030) and long day B shifts (0930-2200) and includes weekends, but no nights.

You will be supported by a deputy matron and matron.

  • Carry out planned care for a group of patients without direct supervision
  • Ensure the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidence based
  • individualised patient care
  • Assist and advise staff, both registered and unregistered in the delivery of patient care
  • Maintain accurate clinical observations of the patient and act accordingly
  • Undertake nursing procedures
  • Have responsibility for the correct administration and custody of medicines according to Trust policy
  • Monitor patients’ progress, work towards safe and timely discharge plans and ensure barriers to discharge are identified and acted on appropriately
  • Act as the patient’s advocate
  • Managerial Responsibilities
  • Organise one’s own work load ensuring most effective use of time
  • Assist in the orientation of new staff and students
  • Ensure that nursing practices comply with Trust policies and procedures
  • Communicate effectively at all times and maintain a harmonious working environment
  • Co-ordinate the care given by nursing assistants and students
  • Promote effective liaison between all members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • Be responsible for the accurate documentation and care of patients records
  • Maintain a safe and healthy environment
  • Assist in ensuring the availability of resources for patient care
  • Ensure equipment is in good working order and report appropriately when defective
