Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA). NRS is responsible for decommissioning first generation nuclear power stations Berkeley, Bradwell, Chapelcross, Dungeness A, Hinkley Point A, Hunterston A, Oldbury, Sizewell A, Trawsfynydd and Wylfa, and research sites Harwell and Winfrith. NRS is also responsible for electricity generation at hydroelectric plant Maentwrog. As a division of NRS, NRS Dounreay is responsible for the clean-up and demolition of the former centre of fast reactor research and development.

About The Role

“Our team is made up of experienced professionals from a wide variety of nuclear and non-nuclear backgrounds that enable sustainable nuclear site decommissioning and restoration. We would like to welcome an individual that can build on their previous knowledge and experience and support this mission.


The decommissioning and restoration of nuclear sites is a complex and technically challenging field that requires adaptable individuals willing to take on many technical disciplines and contribute to multi-skilled teams.


The role requires someone willing to develop and learn. The technical work offers opportunities to gain multi-disciplinary experience in environmental risk assessments, options assessment, radiological and non-radiological management of contaminated land and structures alongside land quality / groundwater management, project management and nuclear decommissioning skills.

Building effective working relationships across a range of groups and excellent communication skills are essential to success.”


The position can be based at any of our sites, with attendance at specific sites dependant on delivery needs.


Key Deliverables


  • Producing technical documents / reports, and/or specifying and verifying documents and reports in environmental, land quality and waste management disciplines;
  • Collecting, assessing, managing and interpreting technical data in accordance with quality standards;
  • Developing approaches to effective management of aspects of delivering decommissioning and site restoration activities;
  • Input into decision making on sustainable waste, environmental or decommissioning management;
  • Build and manage effective working relationships within project organisations, EHS&Q and other teams;
  • Working to high standards ensuring overall quality of the deliverables and ensuring the quality arrangements are maintained and implemented.


Qualifications & Experience


  • Demonstrable experience in environmental protection, decommissioning, waste management, site restoration or land quality management;
  • Can demonstrate a good technical knowledge of environmental, waste or contaminated land management, demonstrated through work experience, apprenticeship or through a degree in a relevant subject (e.g. Environmental Science, Geoscience / Geology, Nuclear Sciences, Engineering);
  • Awareness and experience in safe working practices;
  • Adaptable and flexible in approach to develop novel approaches and technical strategies;
  • Knowledge of environmental regulatory framework and the principles of environmental risk assessment and protection;
  • Experience in managing relationships across many internal groups;
  • Experience in project management and reporting.


We also welcome applications for those looking to develop and therefore may not meet all the essential criteria for the role. In these circumstances there may be a lower grade offered for a development opportunity. The successful candidate would be considered on a case by case basis and supported with a PDP (Personal Development Plan) to enable a clear path for progression into the role.

  • Nuclear Restoration Services Limited (NRS) staff should refer to the document titled “Spot Point v Grade alignment” available on SharePoint for more information on how the grade structure aligns to Spot Points.
  • Flexible working – where possible.
  • The equivalent of 25 days (185 hours per year) annual leave plus Public Holidays (59.2 hours per year). This increases by 2 days (14.8 hours per year) annual leave after two full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year) , and an additional 3 days (22.2 hours per year) annual leave after five full calendar years of service (as at 5th January in the leave year). You also have the option to buy or sell the equivalent of 5 days (37 hours) annual leave each year (available in specific windows for the following holiday year). For the purpose of assessing an employee’s annual leave entitlement, a day means seven and two fifths (7.4) hours. A pro rata entitlement will apply for part time workers.

Please be aware this role holder requires security clearance, or the ability to obtain said clearance.


There is a requirement to live within a commutable distance to the sites where the role is based. For central/multi-site roles, we have various hubs across the UK and can be flexible with base location.
