Job Description
Are you a skilled and motivated individual with experience in vehicle and plant repair? Do you thrive in a dynamic, team-focused environment and want to make a real difference in the maintenance of our fleet? If so, we want you to join our Fleet Services team at Cambridge City Council.
About The Role
As a Skilled Vehicle & Plant Fitter, you’ll play a critical role in maintaining the safe and reliable operation of our frontline fleet—particularly our HGVs and refuse collection vehicles (RCVs). These vehicles are at the heart of our essential services, and your work will directly support our waste and recycling, streets, and environmental teams.
Working across our Waterbeach and Cowley Road sites, you'll inspect, service, and repair a wide range of heavy goods vehicles and specialist municipal equipment, including bin lorries, sweepers, and other frontline HGVs. While your focus will be on HGVs and refuse vehicles, you’ll also support work on plant machinery and light commercial vehicles (LCVs) when required.
Key responsibilities include:
- Diagnosing and repairing faults on HGVs and RCVs, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems
- Carrying out routine maintenance and safety inspections to DVSA standards
- Assisting with MOT preparation and brake testing
- Welding and fabrication work as needed
- Recording all work accurately and helping maintain compliance records
- Supporting the development of apprentices and contributing to a collaborative workshop team
This role would suit a hands-on, experienced HGV mechanic who takes pride in high standards of workmanship and keeping vital fleet services moving.
About You
You’ll have proven experience working on HGVs and ideally refuse vehicles, with strong diagnostic skills and the ability to work independently. A relevant qualification in vehicle maintenance (e.g. NVQ Level 2 or equivalent) is essential, and holding a Category C (Class 2) HGV licence would be a distinct advantage, or a willingness to work towards it.
You’ll also bring:
- A positive, team-focused approach
- A commitment to safety, quality, and compliance
- Good communication and time management skills
- Flexibility to work across sites and adapt to workshop priorities
Essential Skills and Experience:
- Proven experience in servicing and repairing LCVs, HGVs, and plant equipment, including ground care machinery.
- Proficiency in using diagnostic equipment for fault finding and repairs.
- Ability to fabricate and weld using MIG, Arc, or Gas.
- Strong organisational and time management skills.
- A collaborative and customer-focused mindset, with excellent communication skills.
Qualifications Required:
- City & Guilds Level 2 (minimum) in Motor Vehicle Repair & Maintenance or equivalent.
- Skilled Status through a time-served apprenticeship (minimum three years).
- A full UK driving license (Category B).
Desirable:
- MOT tester qualifications (Class IV, V, and VII).
- Category C or C+E driving license.
Additional Information
- This role requires working across our Waterbeach and Cowley Road sites, with occasional roadside repair work.
- Commitment to ongoing training in line with DVSA and Health & Safety requirements.
- This post may be subject to a DBS check as required for the role of MOT testing.
