Job Overview

The post holder will work as an important member of the Multidisciplinary Team within North Bristol NHS Trust collaborating with a range of health care providers in the local community and across the regional Network. The post holder will provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients (in-patient and out-patient) and their carers/families throughout the care pathway. The post holder will utilize skills of clinical expertise, education and management to ensure a seamless service for patients, carers and staff.

S/he will provide advice, support and information from the time of diagnosis and throughout curative, palliative and terminal phases. S/he will work closely with the multidisciplinary team in hospital and the community to ensure a co-ordinated quality service and will be actively involved in education, audit and research. The post holder will engage and lead discussions in multidisciplinary team meetings on their specialist area

Main duties of the job

  • To provide specialist nursing advice underpinned by theory and experience to support patients and their families/carers
  • To plan, develop, improve and promote the skin cancer service ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective care
  • To act as a specialist practitioner, planning, implementing and evaluating programmes of care in collaboration with senior colleagues achieved through systematic and holistic assessment, personalised care planning and onwards referral and discharge to primary care team
  • To provide patients and staff with specialist advice to manage complex symptoms
  • To develop and share expertise within the multidisciplinary team

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Assessment of skin lesions to exclude skin cancer, using dermoscopy
  • Patient cancer pathway co-ordination.
  • Follow-up skin cancer patients to assess for signs of recurrent and metastatic disease
  • Instruct patients in self-examination for skin cancer recurrence, in transit disease and metastatic disease.
  • To participate in the planning and and delivery of formal and informal education programmes for patients, carers and all staff

  • Registered General Nurse – Level One and current NMC registration

Education

  • Evidence of study at Degree level degree in related health topic or willingness to undertake

Experience

  • Experience of involvement in change and development within a multidisciplinary team context

Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • Broad Knowledge and understanding of the anatomy, physiology and etiology of skin cancers
  • Ability to identify verbal and non-verbal responses and react appropriately.
  • Ability to communicate highly sensitive complex issues to patients/carers including diagnosis, disease status, progression, treatment options, treatment modality
  • Broad knowledge and understanding of anatomy and physiology related to cancer of the skin, to include related organs as per disease specific involvement, lymphatic system and general anatomy and physiology and be able to discuss in such a way that is understood by both professionals and patients alike.
