Joining a team of passionate, talented, and dedicated software engineers, as a Software Project Manager, your mission is to empower your team to excel. If you're a motivational leader with a strong technical background and a passion for delivering high-quality software, then you will thrive in this role.
This 6-month contract or fixed-term employment role from September 2025, which may be extended, is covering parental leave. You will support the CTO in delivering a critical component of our aerospace software product.
What You Will Be Doing
Your goal is the teams success: you will be responsible for the management of the development team during a critical software project, managing both the people and the software planning and delivery. It will include:
- Project & Team Management : Oversee planning, scheduling, and execution of a key software development project.
- Product management : Drive feature planning and product management activities.
- Team Leadership : Inspire and mentor engineers to deliver high-quality software efficiently.
- Process Improvement : Champion best practices and continuous improvement in software development and quality assurance.
A day in the life might include one-on-one meetings with team-leads, supporting engineers with technical challenges, leading all-team meeting, tracking milestones, issues and dependencies.
As a hands-on management role you can expect to spend at least 3 days per week in the office in York, performing this role fully remotely is not practical.
Technologies will you working with
The team works with many technologies, from a variety of programming languages (C, Ada, C++, Python, scripting) and specialist internal languages, through to embedded compilers, debuggers, and various management tools including GitLab-based software engineering processes.
What would make you great at this role?
You need experience of managing a software team this is a senior position that focuses on management. Youll need excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to understand and inspire people.
Youll need a software background while the focus of your time may not be programming, you need to have the technical background that lets you really understand what your team are doing and provide technical guidance.
It would be beneficial to have experience of highly reliable software, safety critical, aerospace software, DO-178C, ISO 26262, agile processes, embedded software and product management.
Above all, youll need a positive can do attitude that allows you and the team to solve complex, technically challenging problems. Your strong mix of interpersonal/management skills and software experience will mean that you easily grasp the technical aspects of the product and help the development team work smoothly and efficiently to deliver.
