We’re currently seeking a passionate Solicitor or Associate to join our newly formed Regulatory department. Working closely with a leading specialist in the regulatory field you will be exposed to high-quality work across a range of sectors.


Kamal Chauhan has joined Shakespeare Martineau to lead and build our new regulatory practice. Kamal is bringing with him nearly 20 years’ experience in high-profile, complex regulatory matters across multiple sectors. His specialisms span a wide range of pan-regulatory issues, including environmental law, climate change and energy regulation, health and safety, financial services regulation, professional misconduct, product liability and judicial reviews.


Earlier than anticipated we are now looking to recruit a Solicitor to join as an integral part of the department, and to support the long-term growth plan.


What you will be doing:


This role will offer exposure to a diverse, high-quality and complex workload which is mentally stimulating and rewarding. Managing your own caseload and supporting on more complex cases you’ll also be an integral part of the team from the beginning with the drive and ambition to support on the long-term growth plan.


No two days will ever be the same, managing both a contentious and non-continuous workload. Some (but not limited to) of the responsibilities will consist of:


  • Drafting and reviewing documents
  • Advising on regulatory compliance
  • Defending clients in regulatory investigations
  • Conducting internal investigations
  • Preparing and submitting regulatory notifications
  • Handling a wide range of regulatory litigation cases
  • Monitoring regulatory changes and preparing notes and articles for publication


Due to the nature of the role, flexibility to travel is an essential requirement for the role. Travel within the role will consist of:


  • On-site client meetings
  • Attendance at court hearings.
  • Some team meetings at other UK hubs (predominantly Sheffield, Birmingham and London, conducted remotely where possible).


What you will need:


  • Previous experience of both contentious and non-contentious caseload
  • Deep knowledge of regulatory frameworks
  • Previous experience of representing clients in regulatory proceedings or advising on enforcement actions.
  • Excellent communication skills, frequent liaison with regulators, industry bodies and internal stakeholders.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and the ability to assess situations, particularly when managing complex and sensitive cases.

Due to the nature of this role applicants will ideally based from our Sheffield hub, however we will consider applications where there is easy accessibility to either our Birmingham or Sheffield hubs
