Main duties of the job
As a Band 4 Paediatric Speech And Language Therapy Assistant, You Will Contribute To The Provision Of Healthcare To The People Of Gwent By Assisting Speech And Language Therapists (SLTs) Working With Children With Speech, Language, And Communication Needs Within The Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Speech And Language Therapy Community Service. Under The Guidance Of SLTs, You Will Work Independently On An Individual Or Group Basis In
- Management and Delivery of Therapy Programs: Contribute to the design and delivery of therapy programmes, responding to individual child and family needs. Implement, manage and deliver therapy programs designed by SLTs following evidence-based practice.
- Demonstration of Therapy Programs: Support carers and other professionals to be able to deliver therapy techniques and strategies to support communication.
- Training and Advice: Offer training, advice, and strategies to parents, teachers, and other professionals as directed. Provide support and training to less experienced speech and language therapy assistants.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Evidence of relevant qualifications/working towards B Tech Level of equivalent in a health/social/care/child related topic. NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in a related subject. Either completed or willingness to undertake ‘peaks’ of training in specific areas equivalent to foundation degree status. Knowledge of the role of an SLT. Knowledge of early child development/adult communication methods. Knowledge of possible causes and range of speech and language difficulties. Able to use initiative and is decisive. Ability to modify speech/language programmes to fit the client. Ability to demonstrate a range of verbal techniques. Maintains up to date knowledge of current best practice. Awareness of boundaries within a given role. Manage workload unsupervised.
Desirable criteria
- Specific training in a subspeciality of SLT. Evidence of continuous self-directed development with potential to benefit service. Undergraduate short specialist courses/modules completed.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Wide experience of delivering speech & language therapy programmes to clients. Have an established knowledge of normal development of speech and language in children or have an established knowledge of neurological speech and language difficulties in the adult population. Experience of organising routine admin tasks. Have awareness of the difficulties faced by carers in dealing with the challenges of caring for someone with speech and language communication support needs. Experience of setting up systems and procedures. Awareness of child protection/vulnerable adult issues. Highly developed problem solving skills. Ability to multi-task/prioritise and meet deadlines. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Standard keyboard skills.
Desirable criteria
- Have assisted or led training sessions. Additional work experience with members of the public ECD.
