We’re working with a leading digital insurer seeking an experienced and forward-thinking Staff Engineer (APIs) to define and drive their API strategy. This is a senior-level technical leadership role that will shape how APIs are designed, managed, and consumed across a large-scale technology environment.
You’ll play a central role in establishing API best practices, mentoring engineers, and guiding platform adoption (such as Apigee, TIBCO, or Azure API Management) — all while contributing to a modern, scalable, and secure integration landscape.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and maintain API strategy, standards, and governance
- Lead the adoption of API gateway/orchestration tools
- Design and develop scalable, secure APIs using Java and Spring Boot
- Promote automation across documentation, testing, and CI/CD pipelines
- Act as a subject matter expert across teams, leading design reviews and mentoring
- Align API strategy with architectural, security, and platform goals
- Build reusable assets (SDKs, templates, schemas) to support broader API enablement
Experience Required:
- Proven experience building RESTful APIs with Java & Spring Boot
- Strong understanding of API versioning, documentation (OpenAPI/Swagger), and lifecycle management
- Deep knowledge of OAuth2, JWT, API keys, and related security practices
- Experience with CI/CD tools, Git workflows, and testing strategies (unit, integration, contract)
- Familiarity with API management tools (Apigee, TIBCO, Azure API Management)
- Experience with event-driven architecture or messaging systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ)
- Exposure to containerisation and Kubernetes environments
- Knowledge of GraphQL and other modern API models
What We’re Looking For:
- Strategic mindset – able to align API work with business and technology goals
- Strong leadership – mentoring, guiding teams, and raising engineering standards
- Excellent communicator – able to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Passion for improvement – constantly seeking opportunities to automate, optimise, and simplify
