Job Overview
The formation of a stoma is a life-changing event. Therefore, expert specialist stoma care support is required not just in the acute post-operative period but in the long term to enable full rehabilitation and independence.
The Stoma Team cares for patients before and after emergency/elective colorectal and urology surgery. This is a diverse role involving a significant amount of clinical care, which is delivered within acute/community hospitals, nurse led clinics, patient’s homes and nursing/residential homes. Advice is also provided by telephone to patient, carers and GPs.
We have a commitment to working within the multidisciplinary setting with strong links to colorectal and uro-oncology teams and supporting the enhanced recovery protocol.
The successful applicant must show a significant experience in the speciality, and wound care, possess good communication and interpersonal skills and enjoy teaching, which is a major focus of this role. Previous experience in stoma care and the willingness/ability to prescribe is essential.
The role offers funded specialist training opportunities such as Masterclasses and practical study. Key board skills are essential.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will work as part of a team in providing specialist advice and nursing care for patients in the acute/community setting and nurse led clinics.
Provide support for patients undergoing stoma surgery for both benign and malignant disease and to assist in the adjustment to altered body image and function.
Promote patient independence in stoma care, optimising potential for recovery and rehabilitation to as near normal lifestyle as possible.
Acts as a resource for health care professionals, participating in teaching of patients and staff in clinical areas, aiming to improve and maintain quality standards of care for all stoma patients.
Management of all Stoma Team members (nursing and administrative) including performance review, revalidation, sickness management, annual reviews, training and development needs.
In collaboration with the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist, collaborate in the formulation of long term business and strategic plans for the service.
As a Stoma Nurse Prescriber, to prescribe and administer products and drugs within your area of expertise, reflecting on relevance, effectiveness, cost and BNSSG Stoma Prescribing Guidelines and Formulary.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Clinical/Professional
- Expert Clinical Practice to ensure that the stoma care delivered has patients, their families and carers at its centre, is evidence based and supports patients to make informed decisions regarding their pathway of care through the provision of specialist advice
- With this expert Clinical knowledge and experience, empowering others though effective role modelling, teaching and team working
- To manage nurse led Clinics across the Trust
- Develop effective working relationships and liaise closely with MDT members to ensure that patients with colorectal or urological disease experience a seamless, high-quality service
- To provide strong professional leadership within the clinical setting demonstrating expert knowledge and high standard of clinical practice.
- Management of all Stoma Team members (nursing and administrative) including performance review, Revalidation, sickness management, annual reviews, training and development needs.
- As a Stoma Nurse Prescriber, to prescribe and administer products and drugs within your area of expertise, reflecting on relevance, effectiveness, cost, and BNSSG Stoma Prescribing Guidelines and Formulary
- Promote the provision and evaluation of seamless care for patients and their carers across Primary and Secondary Care by providing inpatient education and support, home visits and outpatient reviews as appropriate
- Pre-Operative counselling and support – to meet with elective patients, and those undergoing emergency surgery where possible pre-operatively to give information and education regarding the proposed surgery and stoma formation. Mark an appropriate site preoperatively, understanding the potential surgical challenges in addition to the patient’s body habitus and physical/psychological wellbeing.
- To act as the patient’s advocate – when required, and support the individual to make informed choices about their own care
- To work independently and as part of the stoma and wider team, maintaining effective working relationships with MDT members, including surgeons, colorectal and urology nurse teams, Pre-Operative assessment, ward managers and Hospital at Home service
- To provide diagnosis and treatment of stomal complications, provide clinical oversight to ileo-anal pouch patients (in conjunction with LGI Nurse Practitioners), and support in management of patients with complex abdominal wounds/fistulae
- To set, monitor and review standards
- To prescribe and administer products and drugs within your area of expertise, reflecting on relevance, effectiveness, cost, and quality of life. Use of EMIS GP electronic prescribing and work closely alongside dispensing chemists and appliance contractors.
Management
- To recognise opportunities within the Stoma Care Service for further development and innovative progression, yet manage change within defined clinical and organisational boundaries
- Management of all Stoma Team members (nursing and administrative) including performance review, Revalidation, sickness management, annual reviews, specialist training and development needs.
- In collaboration with the Lead Clinical Nurse Specialist, collaborate in the formulation of long term business and strategic plans for the service

Audit the Stoma Service on a regular basis so that patient care is continuously reviewed and improved
- Maintain strong links with Manufacturing representatives to ensure up to date knowledge of product developments.
- To be aware and comply with the NMC and NHSE recommendations on commercial sponsorship standards within the NHS, and support the Lead to be the Patient, Trust’s and Manufacturer’s advocate in the negotiations regarding sponsorship contracts
- Act timeously in resolving complaints effectively through investigating and responding at local level and escalate as appropriate.
- Effective networking with colleagues within the Bristol and greater region, representing the Stoma Service at Divisional and Trust meetings. To deputise for the Lead Clinical Nurse Stoma Specialist in their absence
Education
- To work collaboratively on educational strategies which support Stoma Care Services and service development. Develop and deliver formal and informal teaching programmes for patients and carers plus study days/education programmes for health professionals.
- Develop and deliver education programmes on wards and community settings
- Act as a Preceptor/mentor to nurses undertaking further studies in Stoma Care.
- Be regarded as an expert resource.

- Experience of prescribing as per clinical formulary
