Full time starting salary is normally in the range £29,647 to £31,460, with potential progression once in post to £35,388

Role Summary

As a Strength and Conditioning Coach within The Performance Centre, you will assist the Performance Centre Lead in the delivery of Strength and Conditioning support services to our Scholarship Programme, University Teams and External Partners. You will be responsible for designing, implementing and evaluating the S&C programmes for designated University priority teams/clubs and sport scholars. You will also assist in the development and delivery of both internal/external services. In addition, establishing and maintaining links to other disciplines (e.g. nutrition, physiology, psychology & physiotherapy).

Main Duties

Strength & Conditioning Support

  • You will be responsible for the design, delivery and monitoring of S&C training programmes for identified university sport scholars. This Includes the design of individual training plans which reflect the athletes/teams competition/performance level, coaching (including technical aspects of S&C) individuals’ specific to their sporting needs, groups and in field situations using a variety of feedback methods.
  • You will be responsible for the design, delivery and monitoring of S&C training programmes to priority sports club & teams where identified, ensuring the programme is monitored and progress feedback to coaching & relevant support staff.
  • Required to coach (including technical aspects of S&C) in both group and 1-1 sessions within the Performance Gym, track, and field situations.
  • In addition, liaising with practitioners/coaches to ensure interdisciplinary approach. This will require specialist technical and scientific knowledge and experience, identifying weaknesses/ problems, finding appropriate solutions to meet the needs of the athlete/team.
  • You will carry out screening, performance assessments and regular monitoring of athlete’s adaptations to training loads. Maintain records of loading, progress and feedback results to athletes/coaches & NGB.
  • Provide educational seminars and workshops to both coaches and athletes where required.
  • You will be required to assist with the development and delivery of S&C services relating to the Performance Centre external business strategy.
  • Utilisation of coaching feedback tools (i.e. Gymaware, TeamBuildr, Force Plate, Video Analysis, Timing Gates etc).
  • Responsible for monitoring and evaluating the progress of own clients’ strength & conditioning support and delivery standards, being proactive and anticipating any issues, suggesting and implementing improvements using appropriate monitoring and customer feedback tools that require specialist knowledge and experience.

General

  • Assist in the day-day upkeep, maintenance and development of the performance gym.
  • Attend and assist delivery with in-house CPD sessions.
  • Lead and assist on any projects provided by Performance Centre Lead.
  • Assist when required with data analysis and feedback.
  • To stay abreast with the latest training and monitoring research & developments.
  • To represent the S&C team at appropriate meetings and to be a proactive member of the Performance Centre team to ensure the efficient and effective cross-functional delivery of services, to contribute to new developments and initiatives via ideas & expertise.
  • To work within the Performance Centre code of practice, Health & Safety regulations and UKSCA code of conduct, standards and guidelines. Aswell as within the regulations regarding drugs and doping in sport.

Interdisciplinary Support

  • To contribute to the development and delivery of integrating support programmes within the Performance Centre – including liaising with coaches and other support staff professions (including internal & external practitioners).
  • Leading on identified/relevant projects through to assisting with monitoring and evaluating the support provided. Identifying areas of weakness, proactively suggestion solutions to implementing improvements to the programmes and how these are delivered. This will require specialist knowledge and expertise across sports, including specialist analysis and monitoring skills.
  • Assist with athlete profiling and the design of annual packages of support with individuals (sport scholars) and teams. This will require to stay abreast with the latest training and testing research and developments, recommending changes in section processes to senior management, and to communicate such updates with relevant Performance Centre staff.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, Experience

  • Significant experience and expertise designing, implementing and monitoring strength and conditioning programmes to elite athletes.
  • A good up to date general knowledge on strength, conditioning and coaching science research and trends.
  • Experience of working with Coaches and National Governing Bodies.
  • Ability to coach technical lifts, plyometrics and running mechanics.
  • The ability to work effectively as a member of a team towards quality service goals and deadlines.
  • Ability to work on own initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills, coupled with a strong customer service orientation, and the ability to tailor responses to specific technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to prioritise and schedule workload in the face of conflicting demands.
  • Structured and methodical approach to problem solving.
  • Knowledge of various sport technologies (Gymaware, Force Plate Technology etc.).
  • A willingness to adopt and champion new ways of working.
  • A willingness to coach and train colleagues in your own areas of expertise.
  • Good IT Skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Dimensions

This role is line managed by the Performance Centre Lead. You will have no direct financial or staff management responsibility. The role is focused on the delivery of a quality service to customers, working collaboratively with colleagues.

Planning and Organising

Whilst working to a set rota, you will need to prioritise your own workload to deliver on schedule while maintaining quality.

Problem Solving and decision making

You will use your knowledge and expertise to analyse problems and identify and deploy solutions. Some issues may need you to make recommendations on the implementation of a longer term plan. You will be able to proactively suggest improvements. You will be expected to consult with your manager around all decisions.

Internal and External relationships

You will liaise with a wide range of staff and students, and colleagues in the wider University Team.
