Background
Student Accommodation is part of the Campus Services directorate at the University of Birmingham. The majority of student accommodation has been developed or refurbished over the last 10 years at an investment in excess of £100m. The University of Birmingham currently provides accommodation for 6000+ students who are predominantly 1st year undergraduate and postgraduate students, the vast majority of 2nd and 3rd year students live in the neighbouring community in private sector housing.

Arrivals weekend will see us welcome 4000+ students into their new home, and the first impression is everything. The Arrivals Customer Service Assistants will be one of the first points of contact for new students, so the role is crucial in setting a high bar for the excellent experience which University of Birmingham provides.
Role Summary
The Carparking team will form the foundation of a successful experience for all our new residents arriving between Friday – Sunday. The days will be busy and there will be key important information that you will need to be able to explain with confidence to parents, students and other key stakeholders.
The parking team will work across all student accommodation car parks and will liaise with drivers on where to park and how long they have to unpack. At peak times keeping traffic moving and being proactive will be key to success.
All training and a tour will be provided. Training is schedule for Monday 15 th September 9:30 – 12:30 – please only apply for this role if you are available for this time.
Main Duties
- Welcoming new students and their families, informing them of the time limit for parking and supporting with any other queries they might have.
- Providing clear directions to accommodation blocks and any other key areas.
- Monitoring car parking timings, politely informing relevant individuals when their time limit is completed, and encouraging them to move their cars to ensure the weekend runs smoothly.
- Having the confidence and problem-solving competency to ensure any complaints are escalated to site manager.
Person Specification
- Successful candidates must be able to attend an in-person training session on Monday 15 th September, 9:30-12:30 and work all 3 days of the arrivals weekend (Friday 19 th September, Saturday 20 th September and Sunday 21 st September) Please consider any hourly restrictions when making your application, dependent on your student type. If you are a Masters or PhD students you are generally limited to working a maximum of 20 hours even over the summer break period, if you have any questions on this please contact us via the Worklink Portal or via 0121 414 5000.
- Applicants should be personable and approachable, with the confidence to assist and direct a range of individuals with both warmth and efficiency.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to provide excellent customer service, ideally with previous experience of interacting with and assisting a wide range of individuals in a professional or education setting.
- The ability to think quickly and practically, with an understanding of how to work calmly under pressure and solve problems in a time sensitive scenario.
- Ideally applicants should have a strong familiarity with the University campus and wider accommodation areas.
