Background
The University of Birmingham is looking to recruit multiple Multifaith Chaplaincy Student Assistant and Project Assistants — a dual-role position for an individual committed to promoting an inclusive campus culture for all students.
As a Multifaith Chaplaincy Student Assistant and Project Assistant, you will play a key role in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and supportive environment at the University’s Multifaith Chaplaincy. While serving as the first point of contact at reception, your role will also involve supporting the planning and delivery of Chaplaincy services, events, and interfaith initiatives.
Role Summary
The role will be line managed by a Student Equality, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Officer (Chaplaincy and Operations) within the Student EDI team, under the overall direction of the Head of Student EDI. You will work closely with the University Chaplains and collaborate with student faith societies and groups to help foster positive relationships across the campus community. This includes supporting both intra-faith and interfaith engagement and promoting understanding among students and staff of all faiths and none.
This is a dynamic and people-focused role that combines administrative responsibilities with opportunities to contribute to the spiritual and cultural life of the University.
Main Duties
Reception and Administrative Support
- Provide a professional and friendly welcome to all visitors at the Chaplaincy reception desk.
- Handle telephone, in-person, and online enquiries, escalating or signposting as appropriate.
- Manage sign-in/out procedures and maintain safe, tidy, and welcoming Chaplaincy spaces.
- Report faults (e.g., IT, access, alarms) promptly to relevant departments.
- Perform general administrative tasks including photocopying, filing, post sorting, and data entry.
- Assist with the planning and delivery of Chaplaincy events (e.g. faith services, interfaith gatherings, and other events) and Student EDI projects.
- Assist in creating promotional materials such as posters, emails, and social media content.
- Collect and summarise student feedback to inform and enhance future activities.
- Promote positive relationships between students of different faiths and beliefs, including those with no religious affiliation.
- Support interfaith dialogue and activities that foster understanding, respect, and collaboration.
- Be a visible and approachable presence, offering a listening ear and signposting to support services when needed.
- Attend and contribute to Chaplaincy team meetings and other internal/external forums.
- Support the Student EDI team in promoting an inclusive campus environment for all.
- Treat all individuals with dignity and respect, upholding the University’s values of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Undertake any other duties as reasonably requested.
Project and Event Support

Person Specification
- GCSE Maths and English or equivalent
- Experience in a reception or customer-facing role would be an advantage
- Experience supporting events or student activities
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and digital content editing tools
- Proficiency in creating engaging digital content for newsletters and social media platforms
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to connect with diverse audiences from different faiths or no religious affiliation
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- A strong sense of reliability and the judgement to seek guidance or approval from the line manager when needed
- An understanding of or interest in interfaith and EDI work would be key
- Awareness of how diversity considerations affect service delivery
