Technical Development Technician

From testing cutting‑edge meters to supporting engineers in the field, you’ll play a key role in bringing clarity, innovation, and technical expertise to everything you touch.

This is an on-site role, based at our Wednesbury office.

Here’s a taste of what you will be doing:

• Testing, evaluating, and learning about new smart meters, firmware and connected devices.
• Working hands on with electronics to diagnose faults or push them to their performance limits.
• Acting as a tech ambassador, raising issues with manufacturers and shaping future product improvements.
• Creating clear, hands-on documentation and guides for engineers and field teams.
• Supporting investigations into asset performance to help solve real-world customer problems.
• Sharing your expertise by helping train colleagues on device use and deployment risks.

Are we the perfect match?

• Confident working with electronic devices, comfortable inspecting, assembling, or debugging hardware.
• Able to follow structured test plans and accurately record results.
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to juggle multiple tasks and timelines.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office tools like Word, Excel, and Access.
• Confident communicator who can engage effectively with both technical specialists and non-technical colleagues.

It would be great if you had:

• Experience with smart metering, electrical safety, or device certification.
• Familiarity with SMETS, GBCS, or Zigbee standards.
• Scripting or programming experience (Python, LabVIEW, SQL, C/C++).
• A desire to keep learning, experimenting, and sharing what you discover.

• Salary - £31,422 - £43,445 per annum
• Location - E.ON Next, Unit A, Patent Drive Moorcroft Park, Wednesbury, WS10 7XD WS10 7XD - with travel to our other sites when required
