The Tech Lead at Cambridge University Press and Assessment plays a pivotal role in delivering high-quality, scalable, and resilient applications that support the global spectrum of education needs. By providing technical leadership across the full technology stack, the Tech Lead ensures systems are designed for maintainability, extensibility, and long-term success, empowering teams to unlock potential, and deliver transformative solutions for learners, teachers, and researchers.

We are Cambridge University Press & Assessment, a world-leading academic publisher and assessment organisation and a proud part of the University of Cambridge.

About The Role

We're seeking a hands-on Tech Lead to lead by setting standards for the migration of legacy 3-tier enterprise applications to scalable, cloud-native architectures on AWS, with a strong focus on observability and web-app technologies. You'll lead an agile, cross-functional engineering team by setting standards and providing thought leadership to deliver resilient, high-performance systems that empower our global platforms, serving millions of users worldwide. This role offers the opportunity to establish the foundation for future innovation, including the adoption of event-driven architecture (EDA) and modern practices to support successful cloud migration

  • Shape Cloud-Native Architecture: Lead the migration of legacy 3-tier applications to AWS, designing scalable, resilient architectures using microservices, serverless, and containerised deployments (e.g., ECS/EKS, Lambda, Docker).
  • Drive Observability: Implement robust observability frameworks using AWS CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, and OpenTelemetry to ensure system performance, reliability, and proactive issue resolution.
  • Prepare for Event-Driven Architecture: Design systems with the flexibility to adopt EDA patterns (e.g., CQRS, Event Sourcing, Saga) in the future, leveraging AWS EventBridge, SNS, or SQS for scalable, decoupled solutions.
  • Build Web-App Solutions: Develop responsive, high-performance Progressive Web Applications (PWAs) using modern frameworks (e.g., React, Angular) integrated with cloud-native backends.
  • Optimise Cloud Deployments: Leverage AWS services (e.g., RDS, DynamoDB, S3, API Gateway, EventBridge) and Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation) to ensure cost-effective, scalable solutions.
  • Ensure Security and Compliance: Champion secure practices aligned with OWASP and GDPR, implementing authentication (OAuth2, JWT) and encryption (TLS, AES).
  • Lead Automation and CI/CD: Drive automation through CI/CD pipelines using AWS CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins to accelerate delivery and minimise technical debt.
  • Mentor and Collaborate: Guide engineers, foster a culture of learning, and collaborate with product teams, architects, and stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals.

About You

As a hands-on Tech Lead, you'll bring deep expertise in AWS architecture, cloud migration strategies, and observability frameworks, leading the transformation of legacy 3-tier enterprise applications into modern, scalable, cloud-native solutions. Your technical mastery spans microservices, serverless, and containerisation (ECS/EKS, Lambda, Docker), with proficiency in building high-performance PWAs using frameworks like React or Angular integrated with cloud-native backends. You will spearhead the implementation of robust observability solutions such as CloudWatch, Prometheus, Grafana, and the ELK Stack, ensuring resilient, reliable systems that empower our global platforms.

Security and compliance are at the heart of your approach, as you champion industry standards like OWASP and GDPR, deploying secure authentication (OAuth2, JWT) and encryption (TLS, AES) across all touchpoints. Your leadership is backed by extensive experience developing full-stack applications, using Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation) and driving automation through CI/CD pipelines with AWS CodePipeline, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins. You thrive in agile, cross-functional teams, mentoring engineers and aligning technical solutions with evolving business needs.

Ideally, you are also keen to explore event-driven architecture (EDA) and Domain-Driven Design (DDD), with an interest in advanced patterns like CQRS, Event Sourcing, and Saga using AWS EventBridge, SNS, or SQS. Your background may include experience in various business sectors, equipping you to address industry-specific challenges and shape strategies for effective and future-ready cloud migration.
