The Shared Service Centre (SSC) provides our customers with a focused one stop shop. It offers a single point of contact for customers requiring multiple services from us such as: private pilots and engineer licenses, certificates of airworthiness, organisation approvals, UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) and resolution of queries.


The Role


We are looking for a Technical Lead to join the Aircraft Registration team in the Shared Service Centre. You will be a subject matter expert and provide technical expertise to the team, wider CAA and industry.


You will provide advice and guidance to team colleagues on technical matters, whilst ensuring technical standards are applied correctly and consistently. We are looking for someone that will be accountable for their technical decisions within the team and provide training to colleagues when required. You will work closely with other SME leads in the SSC, sharing best practice and ensuring technical alignment across the SSC.


Core Accountabilities


  • Act as the CAA’s expert on aircraft registration matters, and provide subject matter expertise to the team, wider CAA and the Aviation Industry.
  • Accountable for technical decisions within the team. Provide advice and guidance to team colleagues and ensure that technical standards are applied correctly, consistently and impartially.
  • Provide technical training to team members and oversee the quality of technical activities. Provide guidance to the team leader/manager on the technical development of team members.
  • Develop and execute policy and procedure on the interpretation of Registration, Mortgage and Mandatory Insurance legislation, ensuring that effective processes for implementing the legislation are in place.
  • Continuously develop team ways of working to create efficiency and enable consistent service level performance.
  • Work in partnership with other Technical Leads on Airworthiness issues to align technical support/advice across the division and share best practice.
  • Direct department business projects that provide for business process improvement, resource management, overall performance monitoring and quality control.
  • Deliver training or presentations when required to internal and external contacts on aircraft registration procedures.
  • Oversee systems and databases that provide the functionality and resilience to allow the section to meet its legal and customer service obligations. Including providing data reports to stakeholders and customers.
  • Responsible for liaison with insurance brokers in relation to the automatic data transfer of insurance policy information and focal point for policy on compliance monitoring of insurance on all UK Registered aircraft.
  • Focal point for liaison with recommending organisations and GAU in respect of the application of microlight SSDR aircraft. As these aircraft do not require any airworthiness documentation no other CAA departments are involved.
  • Data Manager / Asset Manager for Aircraft Registration Section and the UK Register of Civil Aircraft and UK Register of Aircraft Mortgages.



About You


Minimum essential requirements for the role:

  • Conducted audits and investigations to assess compliance and recommend corrective actions
  • Developed and implemented internal controls to meet regulatory requirements and mitigate risk
  • Be able to make data driven decisions using relational databases.
  • Experience of working within a governance and procedure-based role.
  • Be able to interpret guidelines and advise team members on the implementation of practical solutions.
  • Experience of training, coaching, and giving direction to team members.
  • Strong attention to detail ensuring accurate system data.
  • Confidently communicate at all levels and engage with internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to demonstrate resilience and timely decision making as a point of escalation


Desirable skills for the role:

  • Experience of working on business projects and using methods of process improvement
  • Experience of working in a regulation background


Additional Information


For many appointments within the CAA, these roles require access to operationally sensitive infrastructure and/or Nationally Protected information. For these roles the post holders must undergo National Security Vetting and achieve the appropriate level of clearance.

Relocation & Property

The CAA will be relocating from Aviation House (Our Gatwick Office) to new premises in a few years’ time. Our move is driven by strategic, operational and environmental considerations.


We will be moving to a new local home, up to a 15-mile radius of Aviation House, to minimise disruption for our valued colleagues and customers.


We are now working with colleagues and visitors to understand what we need in our new office, before we start our property search. We will sell Aviation House and land, vacate the site and move to new premises, but we do not expect to move before 2028
