Brief Description
We're looking for a Technology Portfolio Lead to join us in GBRX, working out of either London Kings Cross or York George Stephenson House. Apply now to help shape the future of transport through purposeful and coordinated delivery.
About The Role (External)
At GBRX, we bring innovation to life across the rail industry. As Technology Portfolio Lead, you will be responsible for delivering a defined portfolio of innovative projects — spanning technology pilots, systems development, research initiatives, and operational transformation. We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with exposure to working in areas such as data technology, AI, quantum or other emerging technologies.
You will turn strategic intent into delivery momentum, coordinating work across teams, partners, and suppliers. With accountability for performance, planning, and risk, you will play a hands-on leadership role ensuring that innovation translates into real-world results. This is a vital position for someone who thrives on complexity, maintains structure under pressure, and can lead delivery in fast-evolving environments.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the delivery of a defined workstream or collection of projects, ensuring outcomes are achieved to agreed time, cost, quality, and scope.
- Develop and manage delivery plans, set milestones, monitor progress, and adjust pace and priorities as needed.
- Identify and manage risks and issues, applying sound judgement to escalate, mitigate, and resolve delivery challenges.
- Prepare structured delivery reports and performance updates for senior leaders, delivery boards, and external stakeholders.
- Input into business cases and investment plans, providing evidence from delivery experience and forward planning.
- Oversee delivery partner and supplier performance, ensuring alignment with expectations and value for money.
- Manage commercial and procurement activities, including specifications, tenders, and contract delivery oversight.
- Apply and embed delivery standards and assurance processes to support consistent, transparent execution.
- Drive continuous improvement, removing duplication and helping teams reflect and improve.
- Represent your workstream to internal and external stakeholders, acting as the accountable delivery lead.
Essential Qualifications And Experience
- Demonstrated experience delivering defined projects or workstreams, including planning, risk management, and issue resolution.
- Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills, with the ability to present clearly and influence effectively.
- Experience managing external delivery partners or suppliers, with a focus on requirements, performance, and commercial alignment.
- Ability to deliver within structured governance and assurance environments.
- Proven track record of adapting delivery in complex or fast-changing contexts.
- Educated to degree level, or able to demonstrate equivalent relevant experience in infrastructure, technology, or innovation delivery.
Desirable
- Experience working in infrastructure, transport, technology, or innovation-led environments.
- Understanding of public sector procurement, commercial processes, or investment planning.
- Exposure to early-stage innovation projects, pilots, or experimentation.
- Professional certification or membership (e.g. APM, PMI, Prince2).
