Key accountabilities


As a Technology Portfolio Lead you will be aligned to a product area such as Field, Customer, or Corporate representing the tech service offering within this area investigating the tech needs of our business and defining what good looks like. You will have the opportunity to work closely with the Heads of Products, Core Product Team and Business Analysts across UU.


Your primary responsibility is to facilitate the definition, development, and ongoing management of an optimised and prioritised product portfolio. You will also ensure alignment with the broader technology-wide portfolio to support strategic objectives.


This role brings structure, governance, and transparency to the portfolio, ensuring that change initiatives and their impacts are clearly understood and effectively managed. You will provide the critical management information, processes, insights, and recommendations needed to support informed decision-making and enable successful delivery across the technology landscape.

By embedding best practices in portfolio management, you will play a key role in supporting the execution of United Utilities’ technology strategy and ensuring that each product portfolio delivers maximum value to the business and its customers.


Key accountabilities:


  • Define and manage the technology change portfolio, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy, AMP8 objectives, and regulatory outcomes.
  • Evaluate, shape and prioritise requests based on business value, risk, total cost of ownership and resource capacity.
  • Lead portfolio governance, ensuring robust oversight, reporting, and decision-making across the technology change lifecycle.
  • Collaborate with senior stakeholders across Technology, business units, and external partners to ensure successful definition, delivery and benefits realisation.
  • Drive continuous improvement in portfolio management practices, tools, and reporting.


Technical Requirements:


  • Proven experience in portfolio management or programme leadership within a large, complex organisation, in a delivery based role.
  • Strong understanding of technology change, digital transformation, and IT delivery models.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage portfolio-level financials, including forecasting, budgeting, and tracking of capital and operational expenditure
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Experience with portfolio governance, prioritisation frameworks, and benefits tracking.
  • Familiarity with regulatory environments and capital investment planning (ideally within utilities or infrastructure sectors).
  • Proven delivery management experience, financial reporting and working to time, cost and quality objectives.


Qualifications

  • Portfolio Management certifications (e.g. MoP, PfMP, MSP).
