London Underground (LU) is the world’s oldest metro system. It has eleven lines covering 402km and serves 272 stations. With the new Northern Line Extension, there are 543 trains in operation around the capital. We are a unique public service – and it's a great place to develop your career. We treat our staff with the same commitment we give our customers; their satisfaction is a measure of our success.
Previous experience as a Train Maintainer; automotive or aircraft technician or a mechanical and/or electrical technician will be essential. You will be given fleet stock training, guidance and development to ensure you become a confident and competent fleet Train Maintainer.
The Role We currently have a number of Train Maintainer opportunities, working on a variety of fleet maintenance tasks, on our various fleets, working from one of our many maintenance facilities across the London Underground network. As a Train Maintainer with LU, you will be involved in maintenance; repair; overhaul and upgrade tasks across the various LU Fleets, working at any of our maintenance facilities across the LU Network.
There are two types of Train Maintainer positions you might be offered. A fixed depot position which supports day-to-day maintenance and casualty work or a Fleet Heavy Overhaul position where you support projects for a period of time before relocating to the next site. Advance notice is given regarding future locations so that you will have clarity of future work locations.
You will work from one of our maintenance facilities which operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. These are full time positions and, depending on shift patterns, you will be required to work nights, weekends and public holidays as part of this role.
Shift patterns and rosters vary across our locations, so applicant flexibility is key. These shift patterns are rostered a year in advance, so you will have clarity of your shift patterns.
You will receive high quality classroom and on the job training from our fleet dedicated trainers, and you will work alongside skilled train maintainers and engineers, learning how our varied train systems operate. Under supervision, and working as part of a team, you will learn and become proficient in both mechanical and electrical skills.
Health & Safety is a big part of this role, so a basic awareness of this in any capacity would be an advantage. Once you begin the role, you will be committed to the London Underground General Safety Policy statement and the Company’s safety programme and be aware of their contribution to the programme, including the requirement to monitor safety performance and compliance with the systems established to assist in maintaining high safety standards. You will then comply with the necessary statutory requirements, which includes the Health & Safety at Work Act, Fire Precautions Act 1971 and associated regulations.
You may from time-to-time be assigned to activities outside of your usual duties.
Key Accountabilities - Carry out train maintenance and repairs as detailed in the Work Instructions, to company standards as directed by the Maintenance Manager.
- Carry out electrical and mechanical tasks, ensuring standards of work comply with safe and efficient mechanical and electrical working practices.
- Checking and monitoring own work.
- Using tools, plant and equipment in accordance with safety standards and processes.
- Carry out Rolling Stock testing procedures and fault diagnostic duties when appropriate.
- Comply with all Company Rules and Regulations, including the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) regulations and the 1990 Rule Book & Appendices and LUL (London Underground Limited) Safety Directive 504.
- Ensuring keeping up to date with all service bulletins and new procedures.
- Ensuring that quality systems are always adhered to.
- Contributing to the team and continuous development to improve the skill base of the depot.
