Your future role
Take on a new challenge in Derby and apply your Train System Engineering expertise in a new cutting-edge field. You’ll report to the Head of External Subsystems, and work alongside a dedicated and passionate Engineering team in Alstom UK&I.
Working in multi-disciplined teams and collaborating across the Engineering team and with wider stakeholders, you will own the development of Train level brakes specifications utilising existing solutions from Alstom portfolio and identifying any developments required from utilising your previous brake system experience. You will lead activities throughout the project V-Cycle with a QDC mindset to define and deliver the required performance through verification and validation.
Day-to-day, you’ll specifically be responsible for the brakes system on current and future projects, identifying brake system requirements, best fit standard solutions, specifying brake control and fluid power requirements to sub suppliers, supporting integration design, ensure static and running performance make the case for approvals and fulfil the needs of our customers.
We’ll look to you for:
- Brake system engineering expertise for rail vehicle projects from initial concept to service operation, which will require
- Definition of brake and air system design requirements considering standards, interfaces to other systems and customer requirements.
- Identification of brake and air system solutions considering both innovation and reuse of products in the Alstom portfolio to leverage volume benefits and world-wide relations with the supply base,
- Support detail design of the brake and air system mechanical, electrical and electronic interfaces
- Identification of how requirements can be verified through the V cycle including multiple layers of calculation, modelling, static and on track testing, and analysis of all subsequent data logged, and interpretation of data in closing requirements via results and analysis.
- Support for verification of equipment and assembly for first in class.
- Provision of design support during production of vehicles including configuration control of any changes
- Engineering support during type testing of vehicles
- Reporting of verification data to demonstrate compliance to standards to approvals bodies and compliance with customer requirements
- Identification of problems during entry of fleets into service and working with suppliers and other Alstom engineering specialists to resolve them via existing reliability growth techniques and processes.

- Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent experience
- A proven track record and a high level of engineering experience in rolling stock brake systems and a knowledge of current and developing rail vehicle knowledge
- Collaborating in a multi-location team, including working with suppliers to resolve issues
- Seeing the big picture and the local detail
- Understanding of how software and hardware can be demonstrated to meet system integrity levels appropriate to safety critical functions
- Characterising and integrating braking, control and fluid power systems.
- Interpreting large volumes of train level and localised data identifying patterns and anomalies for further attention.
- Presenting analysis of test and other data in a rigorous and clear manner.
- From limited operational data identifying if problems exist, their characteristics, and further.
- Experience of rail industry is highly desirable.
