Main duties of the job
We have an exciting opportunity to recruit a Band 7 Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) to join our dynamic and well-established team of Cancer Care ACPs in the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service (MAOS)
The Cancer Care ACP team are divided into the inpatient ACP team and the MAOS teams to provide seamless care for our service users. We are looking for a highly motivated individual to join the Macmillan Acute Oncology Service where we provide prompt reviews of our patients by assessing them when they present to UHS for scheduled, unscheduled and emergency cancer care 24 hours a day. The MAOS team are also currently key providers of the Cancer Care Emergency Line, alongside the MAOS Nursing team. This aspect is fundamental to the delivery of the service and is one of the primary ways in which patients have direct access to receive high quality telephone triage and allow for direct admission into our dedicated 24/7 assessment unit
On a day-to-day basis, you’ll work within the unit to learn how to assess, diagnose, and treat patients who attend following triage by the Cancer Care Emergency Helpline service or by referral from pre-hospital healthcare professionals, primary care or the Emergency Department. These patients will have a cancer diagnosis and may be experiencing complications of cancer or its treatment.
You also be trained to handle calls to the Cancer Care Emergency Helpline and will be the principal person responsible for the delivery of this service, ensuring that quality standards are met and that patient safety is optimised.
All Advanced Clinical Practice Education is set around the ‘4 Pillars’ Framework that includes Clinical, Leadership & Management, Research & Development and Education. You will be enrolled on a Master’s Level 7 Academic pathway during your training and this study would take place alongside clinical work. Currently the education is provided in a 'modular' format, most commonly from the University of Southampton, and takes approximately 3 years to complete including the dissertation and all provide trainees with the essential education required for the role. After completing their academic pathways all Trainees are then required to present a portfolio to a select panel to ensure you are ready to progress to a Band 8a ACP
The service 24/7, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.
We are happy to consider either part time working at 30 hours per week minimum or full time at 37.5 hours

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
As a tACP you are expected to work in conjunction with the 4 pillars of Advanced Practice as outlined in the HEE Multi-professional Framework (2017)
- Demonstrate expert clinical practice
- Demonstrate leadership and management qualities in order to improve and transform services.
- Engage and champion research through the application of existing research and contributing to new research within the chosen speciality.
- Provide education and development of others and actively seek this for yourself.
To deliver an advanced level of practice within a specialist field, acting as a role model / continue to develop the knowledge and skills required to provide expert clinical management and care to patients within the speciality area.
You will practice clinically within agreed care protocols; these will be monitored by the Lead ACP/Clinical Supervisor
You will be skilled up and signed off to take calls via the Acute Oncology Emergency Triage line, that acts as one of the main routes of admission for cancer care patients in UHS NHS FT

Qualifications, Knowledge And Experience
Essential criteria
- Registered Healthcare Professional on relevant part of NMC / HCPC register
- Completion of Healthcare Degree (or equivalent - Minimum 120 credits at L6 or evidence of Masters level study)
- Committed and eligible for participation in and completion of MSc in area of speciality
- Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice or the ability to Provide evidence of:
- Supporting a range of learners in practice
- Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
- Evidence of on-going personal and professional development
- Basic keyboard skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Significant Post Registration experience within chosen specialty
- Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives / pressures
- Coaching/leadership experience
Desirable criteria
- Completion of HTPA Competencies
- Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
- ILS trained
- Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
- Registered on MSc Pathway as an experienced practitioner
- Further study at Level 7 within relevant pathway
- Leadership qualification (RCN, LDC, Edward Jenner, Elizabeth Garret Anderson, Nye Bevan)
- Maths and English Level 2 or have recognised equivalence from the ENIC process
