We’re building a talent pool for future opportunities within our
Structures Examiner Training Academy across the
North West & Central Region (NW&C) — which includes three routes (North West, Central and West Coast South) and a regional team supporting Major Programmes & Professional Services.

About The Role – When Opportunities Arise
Our network includes thousands of structures: buildings, viaducts, bridges (over, under and foot), subways, retaining walls and culverts.
As a
Structures Examiner, you’ll play a key role in keeping passengers and freight users safe. Your duties will include:
- Carrying out site examinations of structures within defined timescales.
- Compiling and submitting condition reports using the Alarm electronic system.
- Assisting with special and monitoring examinations for sensitive structures.
- Supporting the Examining Engineers team with specialist and tunnel examinations.
- Undertaking on-call duties for rapid response situations such as bridge strikes.
- Supporting safety-critical site duties and contributing to quality and environmental improvements.
You’ll be based within a
Works Delivery Civils team, supported by a dedicated trainer and experienced Examiners. Training will develop you into a
competent STE4 qualified Examiner, equipping you with valuable skills and qualifications.
What We’re Looking For
In order to be successful in this role, we would like you to have/to be:
- GCSE pass in English & Maths
- C&G/NVC Level 3 in any building construction trade (relevant experience considered individually)
- IT literate (word processing and drawing applications)
- Full driving licence
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
- Able to work alone with minimal supervision

Location: Roles are typically home- and site-based, with work generally within a 60-minute commute of your local area. You’ll be able to indicate your
preferred territory when you join the pool.
🎓
Training: Delivered mainly within your territory, with occasional travel and accommodation provided for central training sessions.
How To Apply (External)
Salary : We follow a structured pay framework;
a starting salary will be offered at
£29, 690 for trainees with no previous relevant experience, or
£31,952 - £36,516 depending on existing skills and experience.
Stage 1 salary is
£38,228 once assessed and deemed competent in PTS, Mandatory Training, and successful completion of Masonry, Concrete & Timber training course.
Stage 2 salary is
£40,510 once assessed and deemed competent as per stage 1, with all of the following: STE04 standard Masonry, Concrete & Timber, successful completion of Metallic Training Course, assessed deemed competent STE04 and COSS or IWA.
Stage 3 salary is
£41,081 once assessed and deemed competent as per stages 1 & 2, plus Bridge Strike Examination competency and on-call working arrangements.

Drugs and Alcohol Standard:
Our Drugs and Alcohol Standard has changed. If successful at interview you will be required to undergo and pass a drugs and alcohol test. Your application will be rescinded if you record a positive test. All positive drugs and alcohol test results for prospective candidates will be securely held on Sentinel database and a 5 year suspension from applying for a safety critical role, a role which requires PTS certification or a Key Safety role on Network Rail Managed Infrastructure will be enforced.
