Job Overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated radiographer to train in Interventional Radiology and Fluoroscopy. The training period, depending on experience, may take up to 18 months. The department covers a variety of specialities including neurosurgery, vascular, urology, cardiology, MSK and spinal.

This is a 24/7 service and requires applicants to participate in the on-call service on completion of training.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to participate in the running of 6 labs, 2 fluoroscopy rooms, an endoscopy theatre and vascular theatre based in the Brunel Building on the Southmead Site.

There is also a Hybrid neuro lab which is part of the rotation to Bristol Children’s Hospital. You will be working on a rota basis within the IR team covering 8:00 – 10:00pm days Monday to Friday.

Band 6 radiographers will also have to participate in a 24 hour on-call service for IR, as well as weekend working.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

To help provide high quality and timely IR procedures for users to enable best diagnosis and treatment.

  • Perform complex examinations relevant to appropriate level of training and experience.
  • Work within departmental teams following protocols and guidance.
  • Control access of patients, staff, and others to the IR labs with reference to radiation safety as outlined in the local rules.
  • Spend sufficient time in IR to gain competence and be familiar with all equipment to be able to undertake out of hours IR on-call service, on completion of training.
  • Rotate through all IR labs and areas as required.
  • Help prioritise and assess workflow.
  • Liaise with Consultant Radiologists, Departmental Superintendents, Band 6 Radiographers, and peers in scheduling and carrying out appropriate techniques and specialised techniques.
  • Liaise with Nursing, Clerical and Portering staff within the department and with Nursing, Medical and hospital staff of other wards and departments to ensure a smooth, efficient service to department users.
  • Effectively communicate with all users of the service using available means e.g., face to face, written, via the telephone, email, intercom etc.
  • Co-operate with new technology and new methods of working as appropriate to the work of a Radiographer.
  • Participate in practice education of Radiographic students.

Person specification

Essential and Desirable

Essential criteria

  • Must be HCPC registered.
  • Must hold the Diploma of the Society of Radiographers DCR(R) or BSc Radiography or equivalent
  • Evidence of completed and planned CPD

Desirable criteria

  • Previous practical experience or knowledge of Interventional Radiology
