Overview Of Project/role

To work as a member of the Ultrasonic Team, undertaking all aspects of safety critical Ultrasonic Rail Flaw Detection (URFD)/Rail Surface Crack Measurement (RSCM) testing procedures on LU track which is required by LU Safety Case. Additionally the job holder will be expected to work as a lone inspector or as part of a small team and provide mentoring in all skills to other team members.

Key Accountabilities

  • Working under the Ultrasonic Supervisor in delivering the weekly inspection work to meet the programme.
  • Ensuring all equipment is calibrated and fit for use at the start of the inspection shift.
  • The correct identification recording and notification of any defects arising from the URFD/RSCM inspection.
  • The provision of a safe and efficient work site through the delivery of Site Person in Charge (SPIC) or Protection master duties with respect to all personnel and company assets.
  • Ensuring all equipment at the completion of the inspection shift is made ready for the commencement of the next inspection shift or quarantined in the case of defective equipment.
  • To ensure all necessary information has been collected to enable the work journals to be completed and signed for.
  • The job holder is required to co-operate with other groups departments and contractors as necessary for the achievement of work tasks and programmes.
  • To assist the Ultrasonic Supervisor to ensure the team are appropriately mentored with respect to all necessary training and Competence Assurance procedures.

Knowledge

Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Hold and maintain a Department Of Transport Driving License (Essential)
  • Protection Works on Track during Engineering Hours (PWT-EH) (Desirable)
  • Hold and maintain a Certificate and license in Non Destructive Testing procedures U1/2, U5, U7, U8, U10, U15, U16, U17 & U21 following a recognised Ultrasonic Rail Flaw Detection training course. (Essential)
  • Personal Track Safety (PTS) certification. (Essential)
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety rules, regulations and legislation in the railway environment.
  • Knowledge of continuous improvement best practice.
  • Knowledge of Non Destructive Techniques (NDT) systems/Standards/Construction techniques. (Essential)

Skills

  • Proven ability to use Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Proven ability to communicate with people at all levels, including both external and internal stakeholders
  • Analytical approach to data management and problem solving
  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills to ensure effective team development and address challenges and barriers that impact on people management
  • Proven ability to follow instruction from a designated person the job holder must be able to continue to work with minimum supervision
  • Proven ability to carry out Rail Surface Crack Measurement (RSCM) inspections (Desirable)

Experience

  • Proven experience of working in the track environment in extreme conditions such as outdoor sites or tunnel sections which potentially involve dusty conditions. (Essential)
  • Proven experience of working on LU infrastructure. (Desirable)
  • Experience of working as part of an on site inspection team of other Ultrasonic Inspectors or Ultrasonic Technicians. (Essential)
