The role holder manages all aspects of the Accident and Health underwriting portfolio of the UK/Lloyd’s segment of AXA XL in accordance with Corporate and Divisional guidelines.
Working with your Life counterpart and Head of Life, Accident and Health, the role holder will fully contribute to the development and execution of the team strategy.
Substantially re-positioned over the past 4 years, this profitable portfolio is a robust, diversified book of business written in the UK/Lloyd’s market using AXA XL’s Lloyd’s and Company platforms. As the only operating unit within AXA XL writing LAH, the portfolio is global and specialty in nature. It includes direct, facultative and treaty reinsurance written within a defined risk appetite. Profitable, organic growth is the core objective for the portfolio consistent with AXA XL’s role as the Large Corporate and Specialty division of AXA Group.
Necessarily, the role holder must possess excellent technical expertise commensurate with their experience across the various classes of Accident and Health business. The role holder must have excellent interpersonal skills and an innovative mindset able to develop solutions for global clients - whether Corporate or Insurance buyers. Travel to accomplish this objective, occasionally at short notice, is required.
This is a regulated role under the Central Bank of Ireland’s Fitness and Probity regime.
What you’ll be doing
What will your essential responsibilities include?
- Contribute to and execution of departmental strategy.
- Being responsible for all aspects of portfolio management throughout the market cycle to deliver plan
- Being responsible for all account underwriting, pricing and aggregate management.
- Being responsible for Marketing, New business and renewal retention by proactively managing Client and Broker relationships including the extensive Delegated Authority Clients of the team.
- Identification and development of new product opportunities, as appropriate.
- Contribution to the design of the Outwards Reinsurance programme purchased by the team.
- Leading, developing and managing a team of 6 underwriters.
You will report to Head of Life, Accident and Health, UK/Lloyd’s.
What you’ll bring
We’re looking for someone who has these abilities and skills:
- Bachelor’s Degree (or equivalent) required; professional qualification to ACII (or equivalent) is preferred.
- A&H Underwriting Experience at senior practitioner level, relevant to the role within the Lloyd’s Insurance Market. Applicants outside of the Lloyd’s market are welcome provided they have the relevant experience of the wholesale trading model.
- A sound working knowledge of actuarial principles, underwriting and pricing of direct, facultative and treaty risks, conduct risk and the UK/Lloyd’s regulatory environment is expected commensurate with the role applied for.
- Experience of hands-on team leadership / management / supervision demonstrating increasing responsibilities and knowledge of team motivation principles and practices.
- Excellent inter-personal, problem-solving, analytical and decision-making skills combined with a outstanding work ethic demonstrating the ability to respond to a changing market environment.
- Ability to lead in accordance with AXA XL’s Core Values and Culture. Either a qualified lawyer with experience of M&A (or other corporate transactional work) or alternatively other corporate experience working in a transaction-oriented role
- Influential negotiating skills and comfort working with legal documents
- Excellent organization, communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and deal-time pressures
