Job Description
Our goal is to bring the widest benefits to society through enabling the analysis of anything, by anyone, anywhere. The company has developed a new generation of nanopore-based sensing technology for faster, information rich, accessible and affordable molecular analysis.
The first application is DNA/RNA sequencing, and the technology is in development for the analysis of other types of molecules including proteins. The technology is used to understand and characterise the biology of humans and diseases such as cancer, plants, animals, bacteria, viruses, and whole environments.
With a thriving culture of ambition and strong innovation goals, Oxford Nanopore is a UK headquartered company with global operations and customers in more than 125 countries.
We are looking for a Senior UX Designer to join our Product Design team. This role involves designing intuitive, elegant software interfaces that support the development and delivery of industry-leading DNA sequencing technology.
The Details…
This is a key role focused on designing intuitive, elegant, and user-centric software experiences that power our sequencing devices and applications. You’ll be working with scientists, developers, and product teams to craft tools used by life science professionals worldwide.
You’ll run user-centred design processes across the product lifecycle — from discovery through to implementation. You’ll help simplify complex scientific workflows and translate technical requirements into practical, scalable design solutions.
You’ll also contribute to the evolution of our design system and promote best practices in accessibility, usability, and interaction design across teams.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Designing interfaces for scientific software used to run our sequencing devices.
- Collaborating with cross-functional teams to deeply understand user needs.
- Creating design assets such as wireframes, prototypes, IA maps, and high-fidelity UI specs.
- Supporting usability testing and integrating user feedback into designs.
- Working closely with developers to ensure designs are implemented as intended.
- Mentoring junior designers or supporting colleagues on UX principles.
- Helping to refine and maintain our design system and Figma component libraries.
- Advocating for accessible, inclusive, and consistent design across our products.
What We’re Looking For…
You’re an experienced UX designer with a strong portfolio showcasing end-to-end design work, ideally in complex or technical domains. You’re confident navigating both high-level conceptual design and the details of component-level UI. You care deeply about accessibility, usability, and creating tools that genuinely support the work of scientists. You’ll also have extensive experience with design systems.
Ideally, You’ll Have
- Substantial experience in UX design for software products.
- Expert proficiency in Figma, especially working with scalable design systems. Bonus if you’ve worked on systems that are used across multiple products.
- Strong understanding of usability and accessibility standards (e.g., WCAG).
- Demonstrated experience collaborating with developers, including handoff and iteration. Previous experience refining handoff process is a plus.
- Familiarity with front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, React).
- Bonus if you’ve worked on software for scientific, biotech, or research-focused environments.
We offer outstanding benefits to include an attractive bonus, generous pension contributions, private healthcare and an excellent starting salary. Based within beautiful, landscaped surroundings with tree-lined walks, water features and a lake, all of which make for a wonderful working environment.
If you are looking to utilise your skills to really make a difference to humankind, then consider joining our team and apply today!
