Business Insider is seeking an Editor in our UK newsroom to execute our audience strategy on the weekends during UK hours, and support on homepage curation, push alerts, and social channels during the week. This person will work on a Thursday-Monday schedule.
The Role & Team:
We're looking for a Weekend Editor who is excited to help drive BI's audience strategy on Saturdays and Sundays, and help manage our daily Owned and Operated (O&O) operations during the week.
As Weekend Editor, you are primarily responsible for closely monitoring, updating, and curating our homepage, push alerts, and social channels on the weekends to ensure that our core audience is seeing the stories that matter the most.
We're looking for a self-starter who is ready to pitch in for edits whenever necessary. You should also be prepared to jump into the news and write breaking stories yourself on occasion on a Saturday or Sunday.
This person will be the sole UK editor on shift on the weekends and will work closely with the Editor-in-Chief during New York morning hours on a Saturday and Sunday.
On weekdays, you will help manage homepage operations and curation, manage posting on social channels, edit and send our morning newsletters, team up with the US-based subscription team on marketing emails, and help manage UK app push alert operations. You will sub in as team leader whenever the Senior Editor is out. You will also proactively partner with the creative team on the homepage, app, and newsletter imagery. There will also be opportunities to edit a range of stories during the week - from scoops to breaking news to analysis.
This role is varied, fast-paced, and will require you to coordinate with Business Insider's global newsroom. We operate in a hybrid environment, and this position includes in-person collaboration at our Old Street-based office. This role reports into the Senior Editor for O&O.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure our site and social channels have coverage of big stories on Saturdays and Sundays. That includes writing stubs and stories in breaking news situations, sending push alerts when relevant, and actively curating the homepage.
- Understand our core audience and suggest compelling headlines or assignments for our main platforms.
- Support the Senior Editor in managing daily O&O operations and strategy: homepage curation, approving and sending push alerts, conducting headline testing, editing and sending our morning newsletters, and more.
- Inform the team about how to succeed on O&O: Share insights and trends around loyal audience reading habits, and proactively spot stories from competitors.
- Partner with the subscriptions marketing team and O&O leadership on email news alerts, monthly subscriber-focused emails, and other subscription-focused writing and curation.
The ideal candidate has:
- Previous experience working as an editor or reporter on a fast-paced beat.
- Excellent news judgment and headline framing skills.
- Ability to work quickly and independently under pressure.
- Excellent editing and writing skills.
- Passion for collaboration, as well as top-notch communication skills, as the role requires working with teams operating across time zones.
- Meticulous attention to detail.
- A strong sense of what makes a great story.
- Experience using analytics to help inform coverage.
- Ability and willingness to pivot quickly and multi-task across platforms.
- A desire to work collaboratively with the team in the UK and wider global newsroom.
Are you passionate about this opportunity, but worried that you don't have 100% of the experience we're looking for? We still want to hear from you! Apply online and let us know why you would make a great addition to Business Insider.
