As our Welding Engineer, you’ll support the Welding Manager in delivering all welding and welding-related activities to the highest industry standards — specifically aligned to RCC-M requirements for nuclear-grade materials and workmanship. Your expertise will directly influence welding strategy, process development, technical governance, and cross-functional collaboration across the MEHA.
This is a high-impact role, requiring technical excellence, sound judgement, a deep understanding of nuclear standards, and the ability to communicate and influence effectively within a fast-paced, high-stakes project environment.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic & Technical Oversight
- You’ll support the Welding Manager in executing a comprehensive welding strategy for the MEHA, ensuring full compliance with RCC-M standards and HPC-specific requirements.
- You’ll act as a subject matter expert (SME) on all welding-related matters — guiding internal teams, contractors, and suppliers with technical authority.
- You’ll develop and optimise welding procedures (WPQRs), balancing technical performance with efficiency and flexibility for site execution.
Welding & NDT Governance
- You’ll ensure best-fit welding methods are applied with a “right-first-time” quality mindset.
- You’ll support the deployment and qualification of welders and welding procedures, ensuring alignment with nuclear safety, productivity, and quality imperatives.
- You’ll contribute to the planning and implementation of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT/NDE) strategies (RT, UT, VT, etc.), working closely with QA and Inspection teams.
Performance & Continuous Improvement
- You’ll support implementation of robust weld management systems and traceable records.
- You’ll promote continuous improvement in welding standards, helping drive down rework, welding defects, and non-conformances.
- You’ll collaborate with MEHA functional leads to ensure seamless coordination of welding responsibilities across disciplines.
Technical Support & Training
- You’ll provide guidance and training on welder qualification and RCC-M specific training requirements.
- You’ll liaise with Bridgwater College’s Welding Centre of Excellence (WCoE) to support welder development and testing programmes.
- You’ll deliver hands-on support for welding equipment selection, consumables, specifications, and vendor evaluations.
What You’ll Bring to the Role:
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- HNC/HND in a relevant discipline plus Apprenticeship (or equivalent).
- 5–10 years’ experience in welding leadership roles, ideally within nuclear or complex EPC projects.
- Proven track record in welding within Nuclear, Mechanical or Process Plant environments.
- Deep understanding of RCC-M codes and ISO 9001-based quality systems.
- Familiarity with international welding standards such as EN ISO 3834, EN1090, EN13480, PED 2014/68/EU.
Preferred Qualifications
- IWE/EWE Diploma or equivalent (or working towards).
- Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status.
- CSWIP 3.1 / 3.2 or PCN 2 / 3 Qualified Welding Inspector.
- Qualified Lead Auditor; Level II EN 9712 Radiographic Interpretation.
Skills & Attributes
- Deep technical understanding of manual, semi-automatic, and automated welding systems.
- Proactive mindset with strong organisational, leadership, and coaching skills.
- Committed to promoting a strong Nuclear Safety Culture and continuous improvement.
- Strong interpersonal, report writing, and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to influence, challenge, and collaborate across multiple teams with integrity.
- Excellent PC/documentation skills and familiarity with weld management tools.
Behavioural Competencies
- Leads by example and promotes a “best for project” ethos.
- Thrives in complexity and can simplify challenges into actionable solutions.
- Values diversity, promotes inclusion, and respects others’ contributions.
- Holds self and others accountable and demonstrates a positive “can-do” attitude.
