Join us in our Infrastructure Protection team where we advise and monitor our Outside Party clients (i.e. neighbours, developers, consultants, contractors, local authorities and anyone else) wanting to carry out works, on, adjacent to, under or over TfL infrastructure. Our team work with Outside Parties to help them to remove or manage the risk from their works to TfL infrastructure and assets.
Day-to-day, your focus will be on-site monitoring and advising Outside Parties as above on delivering engineering activities near and on TFL’s diverse asset base. You’ll make sure that our assets are safe, operable and that projects are complying with TFL’s engineering requirements when applicable. You will be a trusted source of engineering construction advice for everyone, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery.
You will be site based and the projects we deal with may require you to work days, nights, weekends and/or bank holidays. As such this role also offers overtime and/or anti-social working hours payments where you are asked to work such shifts
Key Accountabilities
- Advising Outside Parties delivering their projects on how best to remove or reduce the risks from their activities to TfL’s customers, staff, assets and infrastructure to as low as reasonably practical (ALARP).
- Monitoring and/or supervising of Outside Parties’ project works to ensure that they comply with agreed Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
- Advising Outside Parties on how best to remove or reduce the risks to as low as reasonably practical from their site activities to TfL customers, staff, assets and infrastructure.
- Ensuring relevant industry and company standards are met by applying established policies and procedures to ensure safety and functional aspects are managed throughout all phases of the asset lifecycle (design, build, operate, maintain and dispose)
- Support continuous improvement through the use of effective analysis, data capture and technical reporting.
- Support TfL colleagues as necessary when required.
- Delivery and execution of infrastructure protection works, maintenance works, renewal works, asset inspections and quality checks
- Maintaining working knowledge of applicable external and internal standards, design codes and legislation applicable to their discipline or functional specialism.
- Undertakes risk-based monitoring and surveillance of site works as required, resolving and or escalating risks and issues as appropriate and commensurate with their level of competence.
- Patrolling the various travel modes (e.g. (LUL, DLR etc.) if required, on foot or by train to check on and record new and existing works and report back.
Knowledge
- Has relevant Civil Engineering construction experience on large and or complex projects.
- Good awareness of heavy construction plant, the risks they pose, relevant mitigation and their safe operating in site and urban environments.
- Good awareness of Tall Plant, including but not limited to Tower Cranes, Mobile Cranes, Piling Rigs, MEWPs etc. the risks they pose, relevant mitigation and their safe operation in site and urban environments.
- Good awareness of Scaffolding, the risks it poses, relevant mitigation and its safe erection, alteration and dismantling in a site and urban environment.
- Good awareness of risks associated with their work and the potential impacts on colleagues and the transport system
- Awareness of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints
- Ideally a Technician Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers or prepared to work towards becoming a member of it or other relevant internationally recognised institution.

Experience
- Experience in Civil Engineering Construction and one or more of the following areas: conception, specification, design, testing, commissioning, bringing into use, operational support and or disposal of assets, systems or changes to engineering practice.
- Experience of producing technical documentation or reports.
- Experience of managing small multi-disciplinary engineering construction teams or applying engineering principles to resolve low complexity technical challenges.
- Experience of applying engineering procedures to support low risk / complexity projects or operational activities.
- Experience of building working relationships within and external to an organisation.
The job holder MUST BE physically able to work in the track environment and under common construction conditions including working at heights, climbing ladders, in all weather conditions. The role will involve flexible working hours to cover nights and weekends if required.
