Workshop Manager
The purpose of the role is to manage the day-to-day operations of the plant and transport workshop, ensuring efficient maintenance, repair, and servicing of all plant machinery and fleet vehicles. The role ensures that all equipment is maintained to a safe, reliable, and legally compliant standard, contributing to smooth site and plant and transport operations.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Manage a team of workshop technicians, fitters, and support staff.
- Plan and coordinate maintenance schedules for plant and transport assets, including inspections, servicing, and repairs.
- Ensure all plant and vehicles are compliant with legal requirements (e.g., LOLER, PUWER, DVSA).
- Diagnose faults and manage complex repair work in-house or through external contractors.
- Monitor workshop productivity and efficiency.
- Maintain accurate service and repair records using fleet/asset management systems.
- Manage workshop inventory, including parts ordering, stock levels, and supplier relationships.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and promote safe working practices.
- Oversee vehicle inspections, MOTs, and annual checks.
- Prepare plant and vehicles for hire or deployment to site.
- Support budgeting and cost control by minimising downtime and maximising asset life.
- Contribute to recruitment, training, and performance management of workshop staff.
- Liaise with site managers, plant and transport department, and third-party service providers.
Skills And Experience
- Proven experience managing a busy workshop in a plant, construction, or transport environment.
- Strong knowledge of HGVs, vans, and plant machinery (excavators, dumpers, telehandlers, small tools.).
- Good understanding of vehicle compliance standards (e.g., FORS, DVSA).
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Ability to prioritise and manage multiple tasks under pressure.
- Proficiency with maintenance tracking or fleet management systems
- Full UK driving licence (HGV desirable).
