About The Role
As Annotation Operations Lead, you’ll manage Cleo’s human-powered annotation programs. Working closely with content designers and machine learning engineers, you’ll ensure that annotation pipelines are well designed, reliable, scalable, and consistently delivering the high-quality data our models rely on.
You’ll guide project setup, resource strategy, labelling best practices, and operational workflows. You’ll design and manage the right mix of internal and outsourced resources (including BPO partners), ensuring that both quality and productivity expectations are met.
A key focus will be running a robust golden set and evaluation program, with support from our Quality and Training specialist. You’ll become an expert in how we label data at Cleo, how we measure annotation success, and how we continuously raise the bar for accuracy.
This role sits within our Customer Support team, so you should also be comfortable supporting broader CS operations: including automation work and cross-team initiatives that improve our customer experience and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities
- Partnering With Machine Learning Teams
- Collaborate closely with ML engineers to scope, design, and launch annotation workflows that support model training and evaluation.
- Provide expert guidance on project structure, labelling standards, and definition of success metrics.
- Translate technical requirements into clear, executable annotation processes understood by frontline annotators and CS agents.
- Work with ML engineers to discover where AI can improve annotation pipelines and whether to buy or build.
- Owning Annotation Operations
- Design and run annotation programs across multiple workflows, ensuring they are appropriately resourced and well structured.
- Build and maintain strategies for staffing annotation work, blending internal teams with BPO partners where needed.
- Manage throughput expectations, timelines, and alignment across engineering, CS, and external partners.
- Driving Quality and Productivity
- Hold both internal annotators and BPO teams to rigorous quality standards with support from the Quality & Training specialist.
- Establish and oversee productivity targets and performance tracking.
- Experience & Capabilities
- You’ve worked in data annotation operations, ML operations, QA, customer support operations or a similar field where precision and system thinking are essential.
- You understand annotation pipelines and the role high-quality labelled data plays in model performance.
