NHS Orkney
NHS Orkney, with around 800 staff and serving a population of over 22,000, is Scotland’s smallest Territorial Health Board. Spread across 70 islands, 20 of which are inhabited, and operating with an annual budget of £85m, the Board is responsible for delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care and improving the health and wellbeing of the people of Orkney.
Although small, NHS Orkney has significant potential in remote and rural healthcare and provides a wide range of primary, community-based and acute services. We face the same pressures affecting NHS Scotland, including long waits and planned care backlogs, alongside local challenges such as an ageing population and the realities of island geography. At the same time, Orkney benefits from the longest healthy lifespan in Scotland and low rates of heart disease, which provide real community strengths to build on.
The Board works with local authority partners through the Integrated Joint Board (IJB), established in April 2016, which is responsible for strategic planning and commissioning a wide range of community services. Additional specialist services are provided through Service Level Agreements with other Boards, mainly NHS Grampian and NHS Highland.
In April 2023, NHS Orkney began a renewed improvement journey focused on creating sustainable change. Central to this has been strengthening relationships with Team Orkney and our wider community. Key priorities include leadership stability, improved operational and financial grip, stronger recruitment and retention, investment in our workforce, and setting a clear strategic direction.
This direction is set out in our Corporate Strategy 2024–28, which now acts as our ‘compass’ and guides our improvement journey.

We are looking for people who can apply their knowledge for the benefit of the Board and who have the capacity and commitment to grow into the role, particularly as we continue to respond to ongoing and emerging challenges.
As a non‑executive member, you will contribute fully to the work of the Board, including participation in governance committees. You will work with the Chair and fellow members to maintain public confidence, support the development of clear strategic direction, provide scrutiny and assurance, uphold high ethical standards, and promote a healthy organisational culture. Members may also serve on the Integration Joint Board or act as trustees for the Board’s endowment funds.

- Orkney Resident with demonstrable experience of living and working as part of the local community
- Analysis and decision making
- Constructive and supportive challenge, influencing and strong communication skills

- A Statement of Interest explaining why you are interested in being part of the NHS Orkney Board, maximum 250 words
- Evidence against Essential Criterion 1 ‘Orkney Resident with demonstrable experience of living and working as part of the local community’ using no more than 500 words.
With effect from 1 April 2026, Non-executive members receive £312 per 8 hour working week, paid monthly (non-pensionable) and reasonable expenses. This equates to a salary of £16,224.
You must be able to make a firm commitment to spend at least 8 hours per week (52 weeks per year) on Board business, averaged out across the year with some weeks needing more time and some less. More information on time commitment can be found in Annex A of the applicant information pack.
