Description
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 42,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The Role

We are creating a brand-new team within the Human Resources Support and Advice Unit (HRSAU), dedicated to a new way of managing attendance across NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a central role in shaping how we support managers and staff to deliver consistent, fair and person-centred attendance processes. As an Assistant HR Advisor – Attendance Management, you’ll provide high-quality, responsive and professional advice to managers, helping them navigate all aspects of the NHS Scotland Attendance Policy. You will guide and coach managers through formal stages, support decision-making, attend review meetings, manage absence-related focus groups, and help ensure our attendance approach is efficient, compassionate, and aligned with the values of the NHS.

You’ll have direct input on how the approach develops, helping to shape how we best support managers and staff in every sector and from all levels of the board. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys relationship-building, problem-solving and delivering a service that makes a meaningful difference to staff wellbeing and patient care. You’ll join a supportive team with the opportunity to develop your expertise within one of the UK’s largest and most complex health systems. With a headcount of over 42,000, and an annual budget of over £4.5billion, there’s no better place to grow your career.

Duration, Location, and Working Pattern:

How you’ll work

These posts are agile, requiring flexibility to work across a range of NHSGGC locations as needs arise, covering a large geographical area. You will be empowered to manage your diary day-to-day, though regular travel will be required. We welcome candidates who can meet this need using any suitable and reliable mode of transport. We work flexibly, allowing a great work-life balance while providing timely support to managers and staff. The HR team have an excellent base in Gartnavel, and we'll support you to work from home or any other NHSGGC location.

Why this role?

This is a rare chance to join a newly established attendance team and contribute to a refreshed, modern, and people‑centred approach to managing attendance. You’ll build deep expertise, influence positive outcomes for staff and services, and be part of a collaborative HR community committed to continual improvement and supporting high‑quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist and advise managers in reducing and maintaining acceptable absence levels in accordance with the NHS Scotland Workforce Attendance policy. • Supporting the manager in the lead up to ill health retirements with submission of forms and liaising with payroll; referring to Human Resources Advisor for guidance where necessary.

Details on how to contact the Recruitment Service and the Recruitment Process: Information for candidates

This post may close early due to the volume of response. Please submit your application form as soon as possible. Due to the volume of applications that we receive, we will not be able to provide shortlisting feedback.

AI tools like ChatGPT or Copilot can be great for planning and preparing your application, but your answers must be your own.

    • Show us the real you: Your application should reflect your skills, experience, and motivations authentically.
    • Use AI wisely: It’s fine to use AI for ideas or to check spelling and grammar, but don’t let it write your answers.
    • Why this matters: Applications that rely on AI-generated content may be withdrawn. By applying, you confirm your responses are based on your own knowledge and achievements.

Tip: Think of AI as a helper, not a substitute. We want to understand you, not an AI tool.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.

Flexible working will be included as a topic for discussion during the recruitment process.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde encourages applications from all sections of the community. We are committed to promoting equality, diversity and inclusion and are proud of the diverse workforce we employ.

By signing the Armed Forces Covenant, NHSGGC has pledged its commitment to being a Forces Friendly Employer. We welcome applications from across the Armed Forces Community and recognise military skills, experience and qualifications throughout the recruitment and selection process.
