Job Overview

The post holder will work as part of the Outpatient Team delivering evidence based care high quality clinical care that focuses on the direct need of the patient.

The post holder will be able to deliver elements of health and social care by having the knowledge and assessed level of competence to undertake such a role-locally assessed.

At the direction of the registered nurse, participate fully in delivery of planned nursing care without supervision.

Supervise health care support workers in the same area and assist in assessment and attainment of learning and development needs of HCSW.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

Main duties of the job

At the direction of the registered nurse, participate fully in the delivery of planned care without direct supervision.

Implement care for patients in Outpatients and observe patient condition.

Records clinical observations and report to qualified nurse, contributes to the assessment of care needs, maintain smooth running of clinics. Respond to emergencies.

Carries out specific nursing procedures:

  • Dressing wounds, wound care including compression bandaging under supervision.
  • Suture removal.
  • Blood sugar levels and BM monitoring.
  • All aspects of scrub nurse under direct supervision of a registered nurse.
  • Assist in theatre procedures pre-op/post op as directed by a registered nurse.
  • Ordering of medicines.
  • Ordering of HSDU supplies.

  • Have a good knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

    Implement nursing care.

    Chaperone and support patients ensuring any post op/clinical instructions given.

    Supervise HCSW take an active role in student learning.

    Be able to support patients receiving bad news and relay correct information and information leaflets

    Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

    The post holder will:

    • Take responsibility and ownership of their personal development plan.
    • Demonstrate the ability to prioritise and evaluate work carried out by self.
    • Maintain effective communications within the department.
    • Participate in regular meetings of the department.
    • Participate in mandatory training programmes.
    • Participate in standards and quality improvement initiatives.
    • Participate in clinical trials, audits and research under the supervision of the registered nurse to comply with the BCUHB and departmental policies and procedures to provide a safe environment for both patients and staff.
    • Mentor and support Band 2 and Band 3 HCSW.
    • Contribute towards maintain a cost effective service.
    • Contribute to the implementation of change.

    Essential Criteria

    • Experience of working as HCSW without direct supervision. Good understanding of risk assessment and management
    • QCF Level 4 certificate in Higher Education Health Care Practice. Assistant Practitioner. NVQ level 3 in Health & Social care related subjects

    Desirable criteria

    • Basic teaching & assessing skills. Good understanding of stock rotation and Oracle
    • Ability to approach any problem in a calm and professional manner
