Band 6 Physio - Respiratory Outpatients and Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and skilled Band 6 Physiotherapist to join the Respiratory Outpatient & Pulmonary Rehabilitation Team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

This role involves working across multiple sites and contributing to the delivery of Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes at both hospital and community venues, as well as providing one-to-one assessments for patients with chronic respiratory diseases in diverse settings.

We are looking for qualified Physiotherapists with the necessary expertise to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team, which includes Physiotherapists, support workers, and administrative staff. As a Band 6 Physiotherapist, you will be responsible for managing your own caseload, running Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes, working autonomously, supervising more junior team members and contributing to service improvement. You will receive ongoing training, clinical reasoning sessions, and peer review, with access to support from senior therapists, nursing staff, and respiratory consultants whenever needed.

In this role, you will undertake specialist assessments of patients with complex respiratory and associated psychological conditions, creating and implementing personalised treatment plans tailored to each individual. Additionally, you will contribute to audits and research projects and the NRAP Pulmonary Rehabilitation national audit to support the accreditation of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

• To run UHB Pulmonary Rehabilitation classes and assessments.
• To perform specialist assessment of respiratory patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, developing and delivering an individualised treatment programme based on this.
• To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner and maintain associated records.

To participate in the site on call physiotherapy service once training has been provided and deemed competent.

To assist with supervision, education and co-ordination of therapy support workers and junior members of staff.

You will also be required to undertake evidence-based audit, research projects and participation in the NRAP Pulmonary Rehabilitation national audit to further your own and teams' clinical practice. Make recommendations to clinical lead/manager of service for changes to practice by the team. May lead the implementation of specific changes to practice or contribute to service protocols assisting in the achievement of national accreditation of the Pulmonary Rehabilitation service

Qualifications

Essential

• Diploma / degree in physiotherapy
• Current registration with Health Professions Council.
• A levels or equivalent qualification
• Good standard of general education including GCSE maths and English grade C and above.

Evidence of CPD including recent post graduate training relevant to clinical speciality.

Desirable

• Evidence of leadership training.
• Attendance at Clinical Educators Course.
  
  

Experience

Essential

• Demonstrates comprehensive clinical experience enabling the post holder to manage a caseload of patients with complex needs in this speciality.
• Extensive experience of manage a caseload of patients with complex needs in this speciality. Minimum 12 months post-registration experience, providing a broad range of experience, must include respiratory.
• Knowledge of COPD NICE Guidelines, COPD GOLD Guidelines Standards of Care, BTS Pulmonary Rehabilitation Guidelines, BTS Bronchiectasis Guidelines
• Experience of working on a physiotherapy on-call service.
• Experience of supporting and supervision of junior therapists, student physiotherapists, and assistants.
• A specialist knowledge across a range of therapy practices, routine and non-routine, requiring expertise within the field of therapy.
• Good understanding of working in the community.
• Understanding of current legislation and application to Physiotherapy

Additional Criteria

Essential

• Highly developed physical skills including dexterity, co-ordination & sensory skills for assessment and manual treatment of patients.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills including an ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive, and contentious information.
• An ability to prioritise and organise own workload.
• An ability to cope with a range of complex options, finds solutions, analyse, compare, and decide on appropriate course of action.

An ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

IT skills -- computer literate in email, Word & PowerPoint

Car driver/user for across site and community work

Valid UK Driving licence.

Demonstrate enthusiasm for the specialist area.

Demonstrate a professional attitude.

An ability to cope with moving/manoeuvring patients/equipment daily.

An ability to frequently concentrate on patient assessments and treatments.

An ability to cope with occasional exposure to distressing/emotional situations.

Able to contribute to weekend and evening service.

Ability to take part in respiratory on call rota

Demonstrate an interest in developing expertise within the clinical areas.
