Job Summary

The post holder will work alongside resident doctors and existing ANNPs to provide Tier 1 cover within the busy tertiary neonatal unit at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital. They must have completed a recognised ANNP programme and will contribute to the ongoing delivery and development of neonatal services at UHB NHS Trust. The role requires a high level of clinical expertise, offering assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and support to staff, patients, and families within an agreed scope of practice. The post holder will work autonomously to provide patient centred care and support service improvements that enhance efficiency and patient flow. They will also help lead the development of clinical standards, guidelines, and policies in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. There will be 24/7 support available from middle grade doctors or ANNP's on Tier 2 rota. The role comprises 90% clinical duties and 10% activity related to appraisal, audit, teaching, self development, and research.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

  • Direct responsibility for assessment, examination, investigation, and diagnosis of patients within their area of work.
  • Manage own caseload and clinical priorities according to agreed protocols and working practices.
  • Work towards safe and timely discharge and/ or transfer of care of patients from or between hospitals and services and healthcare professionals, ensuring barriers to discharge / transfer are identified and acted upon appropriately.
  • Report and raise concerns related to Safeguarding, accessing advice and support as required.
  • Ensure effective and accurate verbal or written handover of patients between healthcare professionals.
  • Ensure that high standards of all documentation are maintained, with accurate, complete, and up-to-date information regarding patient care are kept in accordance with Trust standards.
  • Monitor the quality and standard of care provided by all members of the team and all staff in clinical areas. Identifying any skills or training gaps and escalating to the appropriate Manager or Clinical Lead.
  • Provide evidence of clinical competence with the maintenance of an advanced practice clinical portfolio for submission as part of the annual review of clinical practice process.
  • Practice in compliance with their respective code of conduct and within their scope of practice, being responsible and accountable for their decisions, actions and omissions at this level of practice.

    Qualifications

    Essential

    • Professional Registration RN/RM/RSCN
    • MSc or equivalent CATs
    • Non Medical Prescribing Course
    • Teaching & Mentoring qualification
    • Neonatal Qualified in Speciality course
    • Neonatal Life Support provider

    Desirable

    • Experience of transporting of the sick neonate
    • Completion of CUSS course
    • Consent training

    Experience

    Essential

    • Minimum of 5 years' post registration experience at a senior level (Band 7 or above) in neonatal specialty
  • Evidence of on-going CPD
  • Evidence of teaching in a variety of environment.
  • Advanced Clinical Assessment skills
  • Evidence of research & audit
  • Evidence of dissemination of knowledge in wider healthcare organisations
