This post offers an excellent opportunity for a trainee to further develop their skills in all aspects of cardiology but primarily the post holder will be working towards developing skills to a high standard in the management of cardiac arrhythmia and cardiac devices. This will include protected time for training in the implantation and follow-up of simple and complex cardiac devices. (Pacemakers including conduction system pacing, ICDs, subcutaneous ICDs, CRTs). It is anticipated that the post-holder will become independent in cardiac device implantation after undertaking this post.
The Complex Cardiac Devices Service commenced 14 years ago and has grown significantly in that time into an established service with a dedicated "Devices Team" comprising doctors, cardiac physiologists and specialist arrhythmia nurses. The post holder will be integral to delivering and supporting the ongoing expansion and development of the devices and arrhythmia services working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a busy department. Of the five Devices Fellow post-holders since inception of the service, two have gone on to acquire a Consultant Post and all others have been successful in acquiring a SpR NTN in Cardiology.
Inpatient care: Participating in the general cardiology on call rota. Managing the care of CCU and cardiac zone patients. Reviewing inpatient referrals. The on-call Consultant performs a daily ward round and is always available for advice and to review patients.
Outpatient care: General arrhythmia and electrophysiology outpatient clinics under Consultant supervision. As part of the Devices Team the post-holder will also be expected to support the Cardiac Physiologists and Arrhythmia Specialist Nurses in troubleshooting/resolving any technical or clinical problems.
Catheterisation lab: Simple and Complex Device implantation is currently undertaken by 5 consultant operators. The dedicated days for simple and complex device implantation in the main Cath Lab are every Thursday and most Wednesdays. There is also an additional Pacing Theatre within the Cath Lab Suite where ILR implantation.
Multidisciplinary team meetings: To contribute to the weekly arrhythmia multidisciplinary clinical meeting.
Audit and Clinical Governance.: The post-holder will be expected to participate in clinical audit and comply with Clinical Governance.
Teaching and Research: The post holder may wish to participate in both formal and informal teaching. Since 2017, we have established a Cardiac Devices Research programme at CUH and we are actively recruiting patients into ongoing cardiac device trials. The post holder will have the opportunity to initiate and carry out research.
