Become our Chief Registrar in Acute Medicine

We’re excited to offer a brand‑new opportunity for an experienced, motivated and highly skilled clinician to join us as our Chief Registrar in Acute Medicine. This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about Acute Medicine, enthusiastic about driving Quality Improvement, and keen to influence positive change across the department.

As Chief Registrar, you will take on a unique blend of clinical and leadership responsibilities. Clinically, you will work across the Acute Medicine specialty on the Registrar rota, covering Medical SDEC, MAU, MSS and the Medical Take. You’ll be part of a dynamic team that values collaborative working, close consultant support and regular training opportunities designed to help you grow and thrive.

This is an excellent opportunity to shape patient care, strengthen clinical systems and develop your leadership capabilities while contributing to the continuous improvement of Acute Medicine services at the RUH.

Main duties of the job

Chief Registrars Work In Clinical Practice And Have At Least 40% Of Their Time Protected To Develop, Lead And Support Projects That Focus On Key Local Challenges And Priorities, Such As

  • Service improvement: Developing new services, redesigning pathways and introducing changes using QI methodology to improve outcomes for patients, teams and services.
  • Engagement and morale: Providing a ‘bridge’ between resident doctors, senior clinical leaders and management, ensuring that resident doctors feel valued and supported, and that their voice is heard at the highest level.
  • Education and training: Improving access to education and training opportunities, offering non-clinical training, mentoring other resident doctors in QI and supporting them to develop their own initiatives.
  • Workforce: Improving resident doctors’ working conditions, introducing new posts, and coordinating workforce deployment.
  • Sustainability: Improving efficiency, reducing waste and modifying processes to prevent duplication and unnecessary activities.

    Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

    The chief registrar role is a senior leadership and management role for higher specialty trainee doctors. The role allows a minimum of 40% protected time to develop and implement local initiatives focusing on, for example, service improvement, workforce transformation, engagement and morale, and education and training.

    Chief registrars benefit from access to a bespoke leadership and management development programme provided by the RCP.

    Qualifications

    Essential criteria

    • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification Full MRCP ALS

    Desirable criteria

    • Experience in an acute specialty at STR level (or equivalent outside UK)

    Postgraduate Experience

    Essential criteria

    • Training in the initial assessment and care of the acutely ill patient

    Ability, Knowledge, Clinical Skills and Technical Skills

    Essential criteria

    • Knowledge of own limitations
    • Evidence of experience in a range of acute medical specialties, with experience of managing patients on unselected medical take during core training or equivalent
    • Good general medical knowledge and ability to supervise the acute medical take at STR level
    • Demonstrates awareness of the basics of managing acute medical conditions, including emergencies, in patients and out patients
    • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems
    • Able to work without direct supervision where appropriate
    • Able to prioritise clinical need
    • Able to maximise safety and minimise risk

    Desirable criteria

    • Evidence of skills in the management of patients not requiring hospital admission
