We're looking for an exceptional Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks Scientific Manager to help us make a difference to our planet.

As our Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks Scientific Manager, the job may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in the office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and the location advertised will be your contractual place of work.

Our opportunity is full time, 37 hours per week, but we would also consider applicants wishing to work a minimum of 30 hours per week, in line with the requirements and responsibilities of the role.     We are recruiting a scientific leader for the Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks team within the Met Office's Climate Processes and Projections (CPP) group. Working with the CPP leadership team and across the Met Office, you will set the scientific direction and deliver research that underpins our climate projections and informs government and sector decision‑making.

    The Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks team leads work to:

    • Advance understanding of climate sensitivity, feedbacks and radiative forcing from global to regional scales through leading‑edge research.
    • Exploit climate models spanning a range of complexities and resolutions, including state-of-the-art kilometre-scale global models.
    • Translate these advances into improved Met Office climate projections and predictions from decadal to multi‑century timescales.
  • Provide timely, high‑quality scientific advice to government on climate sensitivity and related policy‑relevant topics.
  • Publish findings in peer‑reviewed journals and produce reports, briefings and presentations for decision‑makers.
  • Collaborate across CPP, the wider Met Office and external partners to integrate new evidence, methods and benchmarks into our modelling and projections.
  • Your key duties:

    • Set the scientific strategy and priorities for the Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks team, aligned with both CPP and wider Met Office objectives.
    • Line‑manage and develop a team of research scientists, providing support, guidance and mentoring.
    • Plan and deliver the team's work programme and ensure timely, high‑quality outputs.
    • Ensure integration of the team's work into Met Office climate projections and predictions, working closely with CPP colleagues.
    • Build and sustain collaborations with national and international partners and maintain the team's high profile within the scientific community.
    • Lead and contribute to research on climate sensitivity, feedbacks and radiative forcing, publishing and presenting findings as appropriate.

    As our Climate Sensitivity and Feedbacks Scientific Manager, your total reward package will be up to £75,857 annually, which includes:

    • £54,515 base pay
    • An outstanding Civil Service pension, with an average employer contribution of 28.97%
    • Annual Leave starting at 27.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) rising to 32.5 days (plus Bank Holidays) after 5 years and option to buy or sell up to 5 days per year of annual leave

    Essential Criteria, skills and experience:

    1. Demonstrable expertise in climate processes and projections, evidenced by postgraduate research, e.g. PhD plus several years postdoctoral experience or equivalent. Strong specialist knowledge of climate sensitivity and feedbacks is especially welcome. (Experts by nature)
    2. Proven track record of scientific delivery, demonstrating insight, initiative and research leadership, with a commitment to high standards and quality assurance. Proficiency in scientific coding and data analysis (e.g., Python or similar) is expected.
  • Demonstrable people leadership skills, e.g. line‑management or team-leadership experience, and ability to inspire, motivate and develop staff within and across teams. (Live and breathe it)
  • Strategic judgement, with the ability to understand the wider context, interpret user requirements and translate them into high‑quality research outputs.
  • Proven collaboration and partnership skills, with experience working across teams to co‑develop science outputs. (Better together)
  • Motivation and enthusiasm to shape the team's contribution to projections and regional change, aligning the team's research to CPP and Met Office priorities. (Keep evolving)
  • Excellent communication skills, with a record of producing clear written and oral outputs for both scientific and policy audiences (e.g., papers, reports, briefings, presentations).
