Role purpose


We have role available for a Compliance Monitoring Assistant to join us in Newcastle.


The purpose of the role is to support the design, execution, and continuous improvement of the compliance assurance program by performing control testing, evidence reviews, and issue tracking—helping the organisation meet regulatory, policy, and contractual obligations while reducing compliance risk.


What will you be doing?

Key responsibilities will include:


Assist in the delivery of the risk-based Compliance Monitoring Plan (CMP) through:

  • Conducting testing of controls and procedures (including design and operating effectiveness reviews) under appropriate supervision.
  • Performing file reviews, sample testing, exception testing and other assurance activities to support the quarterly monitoring dashboard and execution of the CMP.
  • Documenting results clearly and accurately, capturing exceptions, observations, and supporting evidence for reporting and escalation.
  • Identifying and escalating instances of non‑compliance and supporting discussions around remedial actions.
  • Supporting the production of Management Information (MI), including trend analysis and insights into recurring exceptions.
  • Preparing concise test summaries and contributing to the assurance dashboard, ensuring all workpapers are complete, accurate, and audit‑ready.
  • Assisting in coordinating day‑to‑day activities of the compliance monitoring function, including control mapping and audit readiness tasks.
  • Identifying gaps in operational controls, recommending improvements, and supporting the implementation of enhancements.
  • Assisting with the ongoing development of control testing methodologies, monitoring processes, and other CMP‑related frameworks.
  • Supporting wider compliance activities when required, including sanctions screening and financial crime‑related tasks.

    Skills/Qualifications/Experience

    • Organised and analytical with a high level of accuracy and good attention to detail.
    • Excellent problem-solving skills.
    • A critical thinker with the ability to interpret and present data.
    • Experience in the financial services / insurance industry.
  • Knowledge of insurance, sanctions, regulatory frameworks and shipping is desirable.
  • Microsoft Office Skills – Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Power BI. Ability to pick up other internal IT systems quickly.
  • GCSE / A Levels including English and Mathematics.

    Skills/Qualifications/Experience


    Essential

    • Qualified solicitor (minimum 5+ years PQE).
    • Experience gained in a law firm, or in-house at a financial/insurance institution, public body, or other private company.
    • Experience in data protection laws and data use across businesses.


    Desirable

    • General commercial contract and corporate transactional legal experience, ideally within the insurance/ financial services sector.
    • Contractual, including drafting and negotiating management, outsourcing and other agreements to provide services, reinsurance agreements, agreements with brokers and correspondents and intra-group agreements.
    • Regulatory, familiarity with the regulations relevant to international insurers and experience of advising on regulatory matters.
    • Participating in and/or managing legal aspects of projects.
  • Knowledge and experience of the club’s business operations, processes and procedures.

    Salary starting from £26,000, dependant upon experience
